Ok, ordered a 4 position fan switch cause the old one went out, googled the number behind switch found one on eBay, putting together now, colored wires to corresponding numbers on the back of the switch tested off, low, med, high all worked, so the wires were in a mess and rerouted them, and red goes to 1, blue went to 2, thin black went to 3 and thicker black wire went to what looks like L, same L back of old switch, reassembled all wires to correct labels and now only High and low work, what happened??? Any help appreciated

Did you try reversing the black wires?

Do you have any photos of the front and back of the old and new switches?

I can only get low and high to work, no medium, the 4 wires are a red, blue and 2 black wires and of the two one is a lil bigger than the other, the back of the switch on each corner has slots where you slide the exposed wire tip through and stays put, each corner has a label of 1,2,3 and what looks like a 7, I pulled out each wire one by one to put in slots of new switch and all worked hi,med, low off so the wires were all twisted with other wires and I inscribed on the new switch the color of wires where they go, now only hi and low work
