    Starting a build thread primarily for my own use. This will help me to document the various mods and stick to the goal of why I’m making changes in the first place. Need to avoid making mods just because they are the latest & greatest thing (yeah, right). Hopefully others will find this useful.

    The Goal:
    Travel the country in a 2018 Tundra SR5 Crewmax TRD Off-Road and tow an off-road travel trailer. My husband and I want to spend an extended amount of time fishing and exploring areas off the beaten path. Looking to upgrade the Tundra and make it more capable off-road and at towing. Want to find a good balance between off-road capabilities and still maintain a low center of gravity. Thinking of 1.5” - 2” lift in front and 1” - 1.5” in the rear.

    The Tundra’s Use-Cases:
    1. Run errands around town. Not necessarily a daily driver but used around the property and for picking up supplies at the hardware store or lumberyard.
    2. Reliable and comfortable long distance highway towing. As an example, in October ‘20, we completed a 6,900 mile trip.
    3. Capable off-road truck to tow the trailer into remote areas. We recently purchased an Australian Black Series HQ15 Caravan Trailer (https://www.rvsofamerica.com/inventory/black-series-hq15-overland-off-road-travel-trailer; https://www.blackseriescamper.com/travel-trailers/hq15.html ; ) and can’t wait to take it off road.
    4. Capable off-road truck in its own right; Overlanding for short durations. Nothing extreme but we want to be confident taking the truck off-road. The idea would be to setup the trailer as a base camp and take only the truck to more remote lakes and streams to fish for a few days.

    Front bumper - Install completed
    C4 Overland bumper on order. Won’t be ready till early May.

    Front bumper lighting - Install completed
    Considering 2x 10” BD S8 light bars. The plan is to mount a light bar to the far left and far right of the opening while leaving the center free. I want to be able to watch the winch drum.

    Winch - Install completed
    Warn Zeon 12-S

    Rear bumper lighting
    Considering BD S2 Sport wide cornering

    WeBoost cellular antenna - Install completed

    AT tires
    Looking at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT 285/75R18. Want to avoid a body mount chop if at all possible. Like the stock wheels so will stick with them for the time being.

    Suspension Upgrade - Install completed
    King 2.5” OEM Performance Shocks and SPC UCAs are on order. Won’t be available for up to 5-6 months (arrrgh!).
    <Edit> Ordered the shocks from Filthy Motorsports. Had a long conversation (close to 90mins) with their suspension expert. He recommended 650lbs springs instead of the 700lbs on the original order. Another recommendation is for a 2” lift in the front and to add a 1” lift in the rear, either blocks, shackles, or leaf pack lift. I chose a shackle lift and placed an order with Camburg. The Camburg 1.5” shackles will get me close to a true 1” lift. Filthy MS will set all the valves to include having everything configured for the 2” front lift. Also, there shouldn’t be any problem running 285/75R18 tires once the shocks are installed. No need for a BMC. Now beings the long wait.

    Rear Locker - Install completed
    Eaton 10.5” eLocker is on order. Decided to go with the prebuilt 3rds option from East Cost Gear Supply. The reason for this route is if there is ever a problem with the locker while on the road, the 3rd unit will be under warranty and is much easier/quicker to swap out then having to have the diff rebuilt at an unknown shop.

    Awning
    Not certain I will add an awning but capturing it now for completeness of this list. Looking at an OVS Nomad 270 degree awning.

    Auxiliary Battery & Charge Controller
    Battle Born 100ah lithium to be installed inside the cab along with a Redarc BCDC 1225D charge controller.

    Skid Plates - Install completed
    Engine and fuel tank skid plates from RCI are planned.
    I went with the Desert eagle plate for transmission protection because it also provides security for the front cats.

    TPMS for the trailer
    Not certain which TPMS to get. Decided on the TireMinder Smart TPMS 4tire kit. Picking up the new TT is a few weeks and will install the sensors then.

    Air compressor w/ tank - Install completed
    Viair 450c OBA and 2.5 gal tank. Install is currently in the works but stalled. Air tank is mounted under the bed but weather turned too cold to continue the install.

    Sound deadening - Install completed
    Dynamat was installed in the ceiling. Working on the doors now, then the floor.
    <Edit> Doors are finished. Working on the floor.
    <Edit> Floor is finished.

    GMRS Radio - Install completed
    Midland MXT275 radio and MXTA26 antenna (6db gain) were ordered during the group buy.

    Yeah, thought about re-gearing but I’m concerned about the hit to MPG. Thought I’d stick with the stock 4.30 in the short term and see how the truck behaves once we get the trailer. The trailer is on order and due April/May timeframe. I’m struggling to find the balance between highway towing and off-road towing. If it turns out the truck doesn’t perform well with the stock gears, I may go with 4.56 but 5.29 seems like a huge jump to me (??) but I’m certainly no expert.

    Mounted a Ridgid job box in the bed to store tools and recovery gear. Had a local wielder fabricate a frame so the box could be secured to the bed rail. You can’t see it but there is a chain that runs underneath the box and loops through the access ports at the front wall of the bed for security.

    Added a frame mount for fuel and water. The frame is 1515 extruded aluminum bar and tied into the bed rail. It’s scrap pieces left over from something I did for my husband’s Jeep. It cost nothing but a little time and turned out to be a good place to mount the rotopax containers. We can easily move the containers between vehicles.

    Mounted a fire extinguisher under the driver’s seat. Scrap aluminum plate was taking up space in the garage so I bought a metal cutting blade for the bandsaw. Couple hours of work and a little spray paint and it was done. Super easy. The plate is secure under the bolt head and not under the seat leg.

    My husband and I made a coast-to-coast trip late last year and one of the things that bugged me was the lack of lighting in key areas. Took care of that recently by adding VLEDS front footwell lights and extended the wire outside the cab to the side steps via the grommet in the floorboard. Using the grommet in the floorboard made running the wires much, much easier than trying to go through the firewall. The mini LED light bar is mounted to the pinch seam under the doors. Drilled through the pinch seam and used 3M tape and M3 sized screws to secure the lights.

    Added a Yakima rack. I really like the build quality and adjustability. The towers and cross bars have hash marks at 1/4” intervals which makes raising and lowering the height or moving components very easy. I don’t have to get out a tape measure and run side-to-side to line things up. On top is a conduit carrier that is semi-permantly bolted through the bottom to the cross bars. Originally used it to carry long levels and straight edges. Lately it’s used for storing camp chairs and fishing poles. On the passenger side is a Yakima Skinny Basket. Between the conduit carrier and basket is a roller and tie downs for hauling ladders or anything long. Under the basket are mounted traction boards using 1” square aluminum tubing and stainless U-bolts. Didn’t want to pay $200+ for the Yakima side bars. If you look closely there are also Quick Fist mounts on both the inside and outside ends of the square tubing for a shovel or axe.

    S&B Cold Air Intake was installed a year ago. Took about two hours to complete. I’d never done something like this before so I kept reading and rereading the installation instructions. Everything went in as planned and had no problems. This thing is big and takes up a considerable amount of space. Haven’t noticed any difference in MPG or HP since it’s been installed. When we’re up in the mountains or traversing high passes I take the side cover off to let in as much air as possible. When the cover is off you can really hear the engine rumble, especially when you stomp on the gas.

    One thing that bugs me is the cable management clip that’s left hanging. It has to be unclipped from the stock filter housing and the S&B kit has no where for it to be secured.

    Added Dynamat to the ceiling and pillars. Then did a second layer of 1/4” insulating foam. The best price I could find was on Amazon here: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00020CB2S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1. One box did the whole ceiling. I didn’t have enough to finish the pillars and needed to order more material. For the foam liner I used this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WQOR4C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and needed two boxes to cover the ceiling of the Crewmax. There was no leftover foam insulation other than a 4”x4” square.

    Taking the headliner out was something of a pain and took a few hours for me to do alone. Before you start be certain to disconnect the negative (-) battery cable due to several air bag safety components being in the ceiling and pillars. A good How-To reference can be found here: https://tundraheadquarters.com/headliner-removal-diy-guide/. The instructions don’t matched a 2018 CM exactly but it was still a very helpful guide.

    A couple of notes about the install. Using plastic trim removal tools is a must. Have a blanket spread across the bed of the truck and ready for when the headliner is slid out the rear window. This will help to prevent snags on the liner and keep it clean. The trim pieces and clips came out pretty much as expected with one exception. The trim pieces/clips (serves both purposes) used on the grab handles located on the ceiling above the windows were the hardest of all to remove. I scratched a couple of them up pretty bad trying to get them out. Had to use a lot of force. Once they are out, then use needle nose pliers to remove the metal clips holding the grab handles in place.

    After working this for a few weeks, the sPOD BantamX is up and running along with an Echo Auto. Power to the Echo device is controlled through the switch panel so it’s only active when needed. I’m hoping it will be useful for hands free checking of weather & traffic reports during long trips. If you’re wondering, no, the truck doesn’t have the JBL Entune system so no integrated apps.

    Here’s an overview of the basic install and I’ll highlight areas where I had trouble. The sPOD installation was pretty straight forward as per the instructions. The cable that connects the BantamX box (located in the engine compartment) to the switch panel in the cab has RJ-45 connectors on each end (think of it as a traditional computer networking cable). Getting the RJ-45 connector through one of the spare nipples in the firewall was very difficult. It took me pushing the cable from inside, under the dash, and my husband pulling from the other side in the engine compartment to finally get the cable end through the firewall. I thought for certain we had pulled the connector off or damaged the cable but no, all was good. Kudos to sPOD and whoever makes their cables. As a lesson learned, highly recommend using silicon spray on the inside of the nipple and on the cable. Think this would have made a world of difference and cut down on the amount of swearing that was going on.

    The BantamX unit was installed on a Rago air compressor mount positioned over the fuse box ( ) in the engine compartment. The positive (+) cable is terminated to a Blue Seas 40amp MRBF block on the battery (https://www.bluesea.com/products/2151/Dual_MRBF_Terminal_Fuse_Block_-_30_to_300A). I really like these types of fuses cuz they are heavy duty and take up so little space. The sPOD instructions caution you to not connect the negative (-) cable directly to the battery if your vehicle has a smart charging system so I used the chassis ground located on the fender next to the battery.

    The eight button sPOD switch panel is mounted to the overhead console along with an Echo Auto. I spent a lot of time researching and trying to figure out the best location for the panel and finally settled on using the SDHQ overhead mount. I’m trying to keep the cab clean and uncluttered so I didn’t want the panel mounted flat on the center console where dog hair and dog dirt seem to collect (I’d be kidding myself if I thought the truck belonged to me. It really belongs to the dogs and I’m merely their chauffeur). The SDHQ overhead mount is made for a SwitchPro system so I had to make a few adjustments to accommodate the sPOD panel but all-in-all I’m very happy with the way it turned out.

    Here’s the sPOD 8 button switch panel and Echo Auto mounted to the overhead console. The SDHQ overhead mount (this the black plastic insert you see in the pic, think it is 3D printed) is made for a SwitchPro so I filled in the recessed area with black Kaizen foam and surface mounted the sPOD switch panel to it. You can barely see the corners of the recessed area. The Echo Auto is attached with 3M tape.

    Holes had to be drilled for the communications & power cables and for the two 1/4” x 20 screws located on the back of the switch panel.

    I ran into a problem because the two 1/4” x 20 screws are permanently connected to the back of the sPOD switch and were not long enough to pass through the black SDHQ panel insert so a nut couldn’t be threaded on. Thought I was going to have to drill out the back of the black panel until I stumbled across “brad hole tee nuts” https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HYLZ33W?ie=UTF8. These things turned out to be the perfect solution. Because of their T shape, the nuts were able to grab the recessed threads on the screws. I considered making flat bottom holes so the T-nuts would sit flush but there was no need. The sPOD switch panel is light enough and the T-nuts tightened down nicely so I didn’t need to do anything else. I used a little Loctite purple #222 on the threads to make certain they won’t loosen up.

    The last item is the Echo Auto device. I used Anderson Power Pole connectors so the wires can be disconnected if I ever need to drop the overhead panel. The connection was extended to the BantamX box in the engine compartment using 16awg wire. Both the sPOD cable and Echo device wires were run through the headliner, down the driver’s side A pillar, dropped straight down the side of the front dash to the firewall pass through. I was a little concerned the sPOD cable might be too short from the run through the headliner but it wasn’t. It was the perfect length, like it was custom made for this particular install.

    The next and final step is where I screwed up. Big time. I must have been suffering from brain cramps or too much alcohol because I completely forgot the Echo device runs on 5 volts, not 12v. I connected the Echo to the sPOD BantamX, turned on the switch, and the cab immediately smelled of burnt electronics. I had fried the Echo device and killed Alexa.

    The fix was to grab another Echo device and also install a 12v to 5v step down transformer. Picked one up on Amazon for ~$9 (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J3MHRNO?ie=UTF8). The wiring for the Echo goes like this: BantamX 12v ==> 12v step down transformer to 5v ==> 5v Echo device.

    I pretty much followed the video except in two areas. First, a lot of people complained about the clunking noise so I added a few strips of sound deadening around the lock. Don’t think it made any difference. The clunking is still pretty loud so a lot more sound deadening would be needed to make a difference. Secondly, I shortened up the wiring in the tailgate. Cut out about five feet of wire but left enough for a service loop in case I ever have to re-terminate the connector.

    The wiring was run along the top of the passenger side frame to the center grommet of the footwell (blue arrow). A small hole was drilled into grommet (it can be removed for easy drilling) and the cable brought into the cab. It is run inside wire loom (green arrows) up the A pillar to where the two taps were made (red arrows). Blue Pop-n-Lock wire is tapped into the white stock wire. The green Pop-n-Lock wire is tapped into the red stock wire.

    I liked their technique even though it is a little more involved. Seems to provide the best door coverage. Three 18” x 32” sheets were used on each door. I went a step further than what is in the video and put one sheet on the inside of the doors and two sheets on the outside. There is a noticeable difference in the amount of road noise. One unexpected benefit is the radio sounds a lot better. It’s a stock, non-JBL system and now has more bass.

    Swapped out the cigarette charger at the back of the center console for a two USB outlet charger. The one installed can be found here: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B081RBCQW1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

    To remove the back panel from the center console I found the easiest method is to open the lid and, with a wide trim removal tool, pry up the lip of the panel from under the console lid. Lift it just a little and then close the lid. Now there will be plenty of room to slide the trim removal tool under the side edge of the panel and gently pry up working around both sides.

    Side note: In most of the videos and instructions I researched, they said to pry up and back to remove the panel. The panel needs to be removed at a constant ~45* angle upwards (see green arrows) but do not try to rotate the panel back and down until all clips have been freed. As can be seen in the pictures below each clip and support is at a consistent angle (small green hash marks). If you try to pull the panel straight back after loosening the top, you risk breaking off the lower clips.

    Depress two black tabs on the inside of the cigarette charger and push forward to free it from the housing. The hole needed to be widened a little for the new outlet to fit and a step bit made easy work of this. The USB charger came with wires to connect to the stock harness. I didn’t want to cut the stock ends off in case I ever want to reinstall the cigarette charger and return it to stock. I opted to cut the connector into two pieces and connect directly to the new USB charger. The stock wire length is great, no hassles to worry about with extra wiring, and it can be returned to near stock condition if needed. One of the easiest mods next to putting on decals.

    Started installing a VIAIR 450C air compressor and tank several weeks ago (https://www.viaircorp.com/oba/oba-dual450c). I was only able to get the air tank mounted before the weather turned cold. Mounting options under the bed are limited with a 38gal fuel tank and keeping the spare tire in its stock location. Best place I could find for the tank is on the passenger side near the front of the bed. I used 1” square aluminum tubing between the front bed lip and first cross member. The ends of the square tubing were packed with open cell foam to keep the mud daubbers out and still allow air flow.

    I cut an old set of sway bar bushings to 3/4” thickness and used them as spacers to help with any vibration, prevent metal-to-metal contact, and to raise the tank as high as possible. One critical purpose for the spacers was to ensure the square tubing cleared the brake lines that traverse the cross member. There’s a finger’s width of separation between the brake lines and square tube.

    The tank is solid and has plenty of clearance from the exhaust. There is space on the square tubing to mount the water filters once the weather warms up. More to come later.

    I was annoyed to notice that my 2018 doesn't have a Jesus bar and found the kit to add one - $168, IIRC. First I added step bars - since I'm 5'6", these were a necessity! But now that they're on, I don't miss the grab bar that much - I see that you have both the step bars and the grab bar. Is it really worth that much to add it when you have the step bars?

    I'm greatly interested in this thread; you're doing quite a lot to your truck, and while I don't need most of the items, I am getting some good ideas from you. For example, where to mount my fire extinguisher! I don't have a cap yet, and I'd rather not expose it to a New England winter.
