Anyone have experience w the Duracel beaded 27F lead acid? Just grabbed one from Sam’s for $129. 36 mo free replacement. Surely it’s better than the stock battery

I worked at various 3rd party auto parts stores in my younger years. Tons of parts (sensors, batteries, hard parts) are just rebranded and you’re paying for different length warranties on virtually the same part at times.

Living here in AZ you’re lucky to have your battery last past the warranty anyways. I would say as long as you have the correct CCA’s, it’s a solid name brand company and you have a decent warranty you’re good to go.

I put a couple of the Duracel brand deep cycles in the boat about two years ago and they are going bad already. I should get 3 - 4 years out of them at least.

Not everyone has a costco near them, the nearest one to me is 80 miles away.

While I do love costco I will say I bought a 27f interstate battery for my FJ back in early June of this year. I used the FJ maybe once or twice a week on short drives. I was in the process of installing a Demello bumper so I took the front end apart, started fluid changes, and then my wife gives birth to our 2nd son in early July thus placing the FJ work on hold. Well fast forward to November when I finally have free time to put the FJ back together and my battery is dead. I can jump it and get it to start but it wont hold a charge. Took it to get charged at autozone after I thought my home charger was broken. They said I need a new battery.

I took it back to costco and they replaced it but I had to pay $13 due to price increases which I guess is fair, however, the battery didnt even make it 6 months which then seems unfair. Go figure. Dont know if I like interstate batteries from Costco or if I'd recommend them. Hopefully this second battery does better.

I have had good luck and the return is painless usually. Price increases are the only downside. No battery brand is getting better-none are what they were years ago.

There is always a bad battery here and there with every manufacturer. I believe most of them are good. I have had good luck with true start batteries other people haven’t.

I just bought the Toyota battery from my stealership for $197. The warranty is supposedly 84 months though. I may have gotten screwed. I don’t know but my old was an October of 2018 build date. Figured I should replace.

Had a Deka in my '17 with no problems.
I had heard Duracell was using East Penn to manufacturer their branded batteries. Should be a decent battery for you.

Not in the Tundra specifically- but have replaced a few batteries in things with Duracell the last year.

So far no complaints - Batteries Plus seems to sell slot of them / recommended I go with Duracell.

Sad fact is modern batteries are a crap shoot beyond year 3. You might get 10 years - you might be lucky to get 3 and a half.

At the price - it’s a decent gamble. Half the price of the “premium” names and reality is probably just as reliable. If it’s the best option and fits the budget - go with it.

It’s funny how certain brands of battery are practically bullet proof and some are just consistent crap - especially OE batteries. Toyota has been crap for me - but I have no idea who makes them for John Deere - but whoever it is has been amazing. Have a 5 year old tractor that sits in an uninsulated building all winter - starts every time even after sitting for 3 or 4 months. Cannot believe it holds power with basically no maintenance. Afraid to even put a tender on it now in winter / why mess with something that’s been ultra reliable.

My John Deere battery is over 8 years old. Take it out in the winter and top it off once a month. This June it will be 9 years old. Still works good.

Used to be a guy when I was a kid-80s- who would refurbish old batteries. $20-25 would get you a refurbed battery with a year warranty. Every battery we bought from him lasted as long as the car or until we sold it. Not sure what the process was but damn those were good batteries.

Not sure if that is more a testament to his ability to revitalize a battery or the reliability of the cars of the era.

But yes - wasn’t too long ago batteries were pretty low tech and easy to service - pop the caps - replace some distilled water and acid and good for another 5 years. Didn’t hurt that there wasn’t too much drawing power from the battery either constantly.

Now everything is sealed and there are couple thousand sensors constantly drawing power. The result - the batteries we need now are a little more complex. Granted it’s still the same basic century old formula (just like a IC engine is still basically the same formula - just a lot more little things). It’s funny though - everyone talks about when things were “better” - I’d much rather have a modern vehicle than one of the late 70s (or even early 70s on a particularly cold morning or hot day) - just like I tend to trust newer batteries more not to just crap out with no warning. Yes - those old ones lasted longer - but they were also more prone to leave you stranded at the least convenient moments it felt. Maybe that’s just because we had no cell phones to call for help though then.

So reading up - Deere batteries are made by Exide - who also makes them under private label for Napa, Walmart and TSC amongst others

Replaced my 2016 battery this summer, just as a precaution before winter, with a NAPA brand... Did my usual research, finally said screw it and went with that.. Diehard marine battery in my boat is 3 years old..never leave the dock without a jump starter... also one in truck..

If your looking for a portable jump box - Amazon has Noco on special right now.

The GB40 is 1k amp and down to $69.95 - I’ve got one in every vehicle and would have bought a backup if I hadn’t just shelled out almost as much on a 500 for the side by side/ATVs.

I had a Gooloo - was actually one of the first I bought (lost it courtesy of a family member borrowing it and “forgetting” to return). It was actually a nice unit and never left me stranded. Much more power for the same price as Noco - but unless you are jumping large truck or equipment batteries - it’s not like there is a need to go bigger - at least with the Noco. When they say the 1k will start a 6 liter gas - they mean it.

I suspect some of the cheaper brands overstate capacity. Noco in my experience doesn’t and has an overall build quality that exceeds the no names. Doesn’t mean they will last forever - or that they don’t have duds (every Chinese built box does) - just means you will have a much easier time getting a replacement when it fails if you registered it and can show you purchased within 3 years. Or of course you can just buy a replacement and then return the failed unit as this model has been out for around 3 years with no visible changes. It’s funny - I used to carry one of those much larger $45 Harbor Freight units for work years ago - I swear the best of them lasted 6 months…but kept receipts and swapped out at least a dozen - no problems ever. They actually gave me a red box unit once as they were out of the cheapies - and that seemed to be an upgrade and lasted until I was done working that job.

Deep cycle lifespan is a function of how many charge cycles they experience and proper maintenance. Checking the water and refilling with distilled water and recharging as soon as you get off the lake are important. I have the same batteries. I run a spot lock trolling motor and frequently discharge my deep cycles to a low level. 2 to 3 years is about what I get out of them. I installed an alternator charger that charges my deep cycles when running the big motor. It helps a lot to keep them charged while on the lake and not discharging to a low level. Kind of surprising that I have had good luck with WalMart deep cycles. I have a Duracell now that I need to replace. It would have lasted longer but was not holding a full charge and it took a quart or 2 of water. My fault for not checking it sooner.

Had to return a Costco battery yesterday after 25 months. The previous two lasted 19 and 26 months. This is a size 51r for our 2012 Accord. They did change their policy a couple years ago so now if you buy a battery it will have a 3 year replacement warranty (you do pay any price increases) and the replacement battery is under warranty for the remainder of the first batteries warranty. So the replacement battery I got yesterday, paying $35, only has an 11 month warranty.
