Is there any special considerations or things I should know if I'm intending to use tire chains when going on icy/snowy forest service roads?

I am getting a set of 4 chains so all tires are covered, however I have heard mixed things about driving in 4-Hi, 4-Lo, with ATRAC, traction control, etc... What is the ideal "setting" for driving off road with chains on snowy roads?

Typically when going off road in snowy conditions all I do is turn traction control off with a quick button press, I don't haven't tried any of the more complicated button sequences to turn off ATRAC, etc.

I want to avoid damaging my drive train.

1st consideration is clearance. UCA and other areas around the front tires at lock and compression.
