When I turn on the AC, I get good flow from the middle two dash vents and the passenger side vent, but hardly anything is coming out of the driver's side vent. The slider for the driver's side vent is in the fully open position and is operable (opens and closes).

I've done a search, but was unable to find someone with a similar experience. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated..

Check to see if the duct is fully connected under the steering column.

If you close both passenger vents and middle driver vent, do you feel any coming from the vent below steering wheel ? If not, check what @Lil Steve mentioned.

Mine does the same thing...Super weak flow from the side vent. Poor design, possibly? IDK. Where I live it rarely gets over 70, so I don't use the A/C that much, not a big issue, but interested in if this is a typical issue.

Check for rodent signs. Lately it seems more people are getting mice in the engine bay and climbing in to the cab. If the above doesn’t work try to see if you have a mouse nest.

Well, I believe I have good news, although I won't be sure until I investigate further tomorrow. If appears the driver's side lower HVAC duct has come loose. Last month I had removed the lower dash panel below the steering wheel when I was tracing down a problem with the headlights always being on. Seems when I put the panel back together I must have jarred loose the ducting as it is now hanging below the lower dash panel by and inch or so. I'll need to remove the lower dash panel again (4 bolts) and re-insert the ductwork properly. I am sure this is my issue!

Never heard of it being a "typical issue". Personally, I'm a single driver most of the time, so the passenger vent is off and all others point to driver. Normal air flow is fine but more so for driver if passenger vent closed.

This may sound crazy but have you checked your Freon levels?

My 04 highlander somehow blew hot air out of the driver vent while blowing cold out of the other vents when my Freon was low. The system had a leak.
