i have a 03 tundra access cab. inside drivers side door handle broke. replaced with a new handle that is aftermarket. is the after market handle the problem? the lock cable that connects to the lock button on the handle doesn't engage well with new handle. now the door wont shut and the latch seems to be in the wrong position with rubber over the latch wearing off. is this related to the new handle/ cable? i tried to grease the latch but that didn't help either. does the lock latch mechanism need to be replaced? thank you for any help!!

Aftermarket parts are known to be problematic with this generation of Tundras. Especially with door latches. I feel bad for the one guy who was on here last year or earlier this year and had to pay a body shop hundreds of dollars to jimmy his door open after he spent hours trying to get it open himself... An attempt to save money turned into a huge loss.

Anyway, your issue sounds like (from your words alone) what people typically deal with when they install handles in locked position, whether door handle or tailgate handle. If you didn't remove or readjust the latch - which, did you do either? - then that shouldn't be the problem?

That you're telling us the lock cable fitment seems to be shitty, that would impact function, but not strike. Here's a test: Reinstall the interior door handle handle with the locking cable disconnected, specifically. MAKE SURE IT'S THE LOCKING CABLE, NOT THE HANDLE CABLE b/c you don't want your door to get stuck closed. In fact, install everything with the door card (the door panel) OFF at first so you can watch how everything is working. You can also plug in the door controls with the door panel off to test that function.

Of all the brands on the market, things I would never trust:
    • Anything you buy on scAmazon, fleaBay or WallyMart's websites, since there are so many knockoffs/imposters/shit quality parts on both - you're a fool if you shop for appliance/vehicle/small engine parts on any of those places.
    • Anything from a name brand I've never heard of or doesn't have at least 20-30 years experience in the industry
    • Anything "OEM" but being sold from somewhere other than Toyota's national parts portal.
Dorman typically does a really solid job with handles/pulls for our trucks.

its the rubber plastic on the actual door latch that has worn off and it wedged up in the slot and wont allow the latch to sit in its correct position. anyone else have this issue? the aftermarket handle is working.

It sounds like you need a new latch, mine got hard to open and close on the drivers side after about 20 years of use. Not a cheap part (OEM), but get it while it's still available, the scuttlebut is, the aftermarket latches aren't too good. It's a bit of a job to install, so do it once.
