Driveline coasting sound

Whenever slowing down, coasting, a rythmetic (driveline?)sound appears at 15mph down to 12 mph. Anyone else notice this or have ideas?

 

I have witnessed this recently on mine when slowing down and turning left on the street I live on…about that mph you stated as well. Mines a ‘22 essentially stock with 11k miles

 

So I had something similar when I first got my truck. Noticed it right away when pulling into my parking garage at work. Cadence appeared during low speeds and would be rhythmic. Would go away at higher speeds......ended up being that my rear axle was out of spec and needed to be replaced. According to the tech that they flew in to diagnose, this was the first tundra that he had seen at the time with the issue, but it was known with tacomas. They replaced the entire rear axle assembly and hasn't been an issue since. Just turned over 80k miles.

 

Was about to make this a post myself! YES SIR!.....from about 12-16MPH (specially when decelerating) my 2023 Tundra Crewmax Platinum 4X4 makes a distinct rhythmic sound...sounds like the driveline. Took it to my Toyota dealer and rode with the Tech who also confirmed the noise!.....Got a call back a few hours later and was told the noise is NORMAL....A Toyota Master Tech took over on my truck I guess and told me it's basically a deloading of the driveline at that speed. They also told me that the 3 other Tundra's on the lot make the same noise. So then, still not convinced....I went and test drove a brand new Tundra and low and behold it makes the same EXACT noise. So they are either all faulty or they are truly "Normal"....Its just suspiring to hear since the truck is FLAWLESS other wise. Not a squeak or rattle anywhere. Truck is super refined other wise....

 

I notice the same sound. Mostly in my neighborhood when coasting under 25mph and coming to a stop. I don't feel anything, but I can hear it with the windows down.

My initial thoughts were: 1) odd exhaust drone 2) tire noise 3) rear axle hum

I’ve never heard it so I was wondering if it was a hybrid thing since they have some simulated noise added at low speeds.

 

it is a definite "whomp....Whomp....whomp" sound that is rhythmic and it happens between 12-17ish MPH, specially when decelerating....completely does not make the noise when going slower or faster than those speeds. I tried getting a video/audio of it but its hard to make out.....I also first noticed the sound with all the windows down. With the A/C on and or music playing even low, you cant hear it. Again its not a terrible sound...Just surprising given the overall refinement of the truck.

 

Not “normal”. Time to elevate to regional

 

Light load/no load on drivetrain at 40ish and 80ish. I’m at 30k now I’ve been holding off taking it in because it’s 2 hours round trip and I’ve got 8 hours invested so far to fix the wind noise I hear and they hear and it’s not fixed yet. I’ve been waiting on a more definitive solution. I’m pretty sure it’s the rear diff.

 

Might be a stupid question, but do you all have the JBL sound system? Could it be part of the augmented noise?

 

Would be interesting to see if those that have this drone and JBL have also turned it off with Carista. Likely nobody yet though.

 

Yes I do have JBL and have thought this.....The "master tech" that worked on mine told me that he did verify the noise from underneath the truck and it is coming from the driveline...What's weird about the noise, is if you accelerate to like 15MPH it doesn't make the noise really until you coast at 15MPH.... if that makes sense....I have thought about taking this issue to regional....but after test driving two brand new Tundras that also makes this noise....leads me to believe the noise is normal and just not everyone is out to listen for it....IDK....

 

Same issue here. Whining hum house when slightly accelerating at 77+ mph.

Try this, open rear window when parked, press gas pedal to get rpm to 2k or slightly above, do you hear the same whining noise? I do

 

I don't have the JBL or the fake motor sounds.

 

I have it too but I also feel it. Definitely drive line shudder. I have a '23 Limited HV long box that currently has about 8,000 km (5000 miles). The driveline shudders from about 30 km/h down to 15 km/h (18 mph down to 10 mph). It is not crazy vibration but is definitely noticeable. Initially I thought it was the disengaging of the engine as it shuts down around this same time in deceleration but I was able to get it to do it when in only electric driving mode also. If I put the transmission in neutral it does not do it at all. Weird thing is it does not always happen, but it is frequent.

Planning to have this looked at along with my headliner rattle, center console rattle and B pillar wind noise. Awesome truck so far

 

I just wanted to re-specify that my driveline shudder is more of a noise, not a vibration you can feel....And if you read my replies for before, I was told by my Toyota dealer that this noise is 100% normal and then I test drove two other Tundra's with single digit miles on them, and they made this noise as well...Some replies of this thread said to take it to regional Toyota, where a Tech from actual Toyota looks at it and can re-diagnose it....I was offered this from my dealer and may eventually do this.....but keep us posted Tumbler!!
