I have a 2024, 1794 non-hybrid, no modifications. Today while driving down the highway at 73mph--level highway, steady speed--I switched Drive Mode from Normal to Sport. With no change in throttle position, the rpm went from 1850 to just under 2200 (2150 or so). It was almost as though it had forced a downshift in the transmission, even though I couldn't feel it if that occurred. I switched back to Normal and the rpm dropped back to 1850. Switched back to Sport and rpm jumped back up. Never did feel any transmission shifting, though it may have without my knowing it. So my question: Is this typical for Sport mode?

Yes, sport mode holds a specific gear for longer (ie, higher rpm) similar to tow haul setting. Likewise going to eco mode it will shift to a higher gear sooner and a/c will have reduced output.

You simply didn't The transmission shift.

    Edit, didn't feel it shift.

It also stiffens the steering, from what I have noticed

@Nm6300'asl I thought it was in a lower gear, but didn't accelerate to a higher speed to see if it shifted up. And you're right, I didn't feel it downshift when I selected Sport mode. (I never use ECO mode.)

Where are you located in New Mexico? From the altitude listed, you must be around Santa Fe or Taos area. Beautiful mountains up that way.

If you haven't already tried, check out tow haul+ that's where the real fun is. Lol

Yes it is nice up here.

Try going up one notch to Sport + RPMs settle back down to under 2000 on flat stretches, increases when pulling hills. Still gets about 17mpg, and much more responsive.

My 2022 1794 displays what changes are made in each driving mode, does your 2024 not do that?

@owaters The only change I see is "Sport" on the outer band around the speedometer. I'll have to try Sport+.

I have the AVS and tow package, not sure if that might be the difference

Appreciate your comments. Just went and pressed the Tow/Haul button (never had occasion to do that before) and the selected the Drive Mode; it gave me the option for Tow+. Learned something new today! There's another optional package that gives the "Custom, Sports+, and Comfort" options in the drive mode; I believe it's the AVS, but not certain. It's been a day or so since I read the manual! (Yes, I DID read it!!)

Only if you have avs and sport +
Sport vs sport plus changes nothing in the rpms. All it changes is the steering and suspension

Custom is the avs. You can pick how the drive train will respond, steering, and suspension. I always out my truck in custom. Normal drive train, sport steering and comfort suspension.

I would have gone with the AVS if it was available on any of the 1794 Tundras the dealer had when we purchased. However, we are very satisfied with the features it has.

I don’t have the AVS and just have sport mode, it definitely stiffens the steering. It’s night and day.

I have all of those with my 1794 with AVS, HUD, and Tow package.

Both modes change the shift points in the transmission, which results in higher rpms... to me, there is a noticable difference in engine response between Sport and Sport+
