Unfortunately, I have the dreaded secondary air injection issue on my 2009 Tundra (Code P2442). Can someone tell me all the OEM parts that I need to fix this issue. I want to replace the pumps, valves, and associated parts. Also can someone tell me the part number for the upgraded tube that prevents water or condensation from getting in?

Don’t forget there are other more affordable options as well such as a Tune via DAP or any anyone else using HPtuners, and also the SAIS bypass kits. IMO the tune is the easiest and comes with other benefits for your money.

I don’t think I can use the bypass kit since I live in a state that does Emissions inspections.

Can you explain exactly what the DAP tune is and does it affect emissions?

It is a tune that benefits your truck as far as producing more power via timing advancements and other things. It also changes the shift points for improved drivability. As for the SAIS, the tuner has the ability to basically block those codes from being reported. It won’t fix your air injection pumps but it won’t tattle that the system isn’t working properly either. Emissions checks shouldn’t be an issue. In my state (PA) if there is no check engine light they aren’t allowed to investigate any further. They can’t go looking for such a thing, and I even if they did I don’t think they would find anything unless they could look at the tune file in HPtuners software to see what codes were being blocked.

If you have just the P2442 code, can’t you just replace the pump and air check valves in bank 2 only? I’m guessing that bank 2 is located in the right front wheel well and bank 1 might be under the intake manifold (if 5.7L) The main reason it’s a costly repair because they replace the whole thing in both banks and it’s labor intensive due to having to remove the intake manifold. It’s usually better to replace all pumps and the valve assembly but it hurts your pockets.

I had my whole SAIP system replaced in 2017 and started having the same issues again myself. Toyota has no true fix to this system. This is a design issue on their part and they need to take responsibility! Various models of the 2nd gen and even the 1st gen has this freakin issue.

If you don’t want to dump money just get the bypass kit or try the DAP tune like someone mentioned. I don’t foresee it affecting your emissions much unless they happen to really look

Ummmm…are you sure? Because regardless of which component fails, you still have to replace both pumps and the valve and this does involve taking the manifold off. Dealership always recommends replacing all to avoid having to come back if another issue arises. From my understanding, it’s located in the engine bay.

I’m still thinking, but then I have to worry about emissions testing. Luckily I have already done it this past December when inspections was due. I’m good at least til the end of December.

I came from a state that had emission inspections. Drive with lots of hard accels on your way there to ensure that the catalytic converter is warmed. Not that you need to, but I've even used rubbing/isopropyl alcohol to get things heated further (my car at the time had a straight pipe).

Also, just did the Hewitt-Tech delete kit. The purpose of the SAIS is to introduce fresh air for ~60sec during initial startup. It is a system to ensure minimized emissions before the cat has fully heated. The only way a delete kit will affect testing is if there's a long line and your vehicle completely cools before you get put on the dyno.

Read their website as it answers everything you want to know about SAIS: https://hewitt-tech.com/

I normally have my truck service at the dealership. If I were to install the Hewitt bypass kit, would it be noticeable? Also, would it affect the value if I were to trade it in or sale it in the coming years? I was planning to keep it at least a couple more years.

I think I have an idea. I looked online on the Toyota website where you can buy genuine OEM parts. I was looking at the parts that I could get and contacted customer service on all the parts involved for the SAIP system. I know a guy that can replace all the parts for me without having to go to the dealership. Aside from replacing both pumps and the valves, it’s also important to replace the pump hose (preferably the upgraded one that replaces the old one that is prone to water intrusion). The part number for the upgraded one is 176210s012. You may also need a pipe gasket and the hose clamp as well. The part that really sucks is taking apart the manifold. I damn sure hope the truck feels the same as original when I get this done.

    -Is it noticeable?
In theory, no, because it's just a harness and two block off plates. In actuality, if a buyer was sharp, it's obvious that there are harness connectors floating where the OEMs are disconnected from the drivers.

    Affect resale?
-If private, suppose that'd come down to who purchases the truck. If traded in, then negatively. They'd have to remove it and install a functioning SAIS.

If they really pay attention and dig deep . I can’t say yes or no if it would affect the selling value. It depends on what they can see and figure out. If they found out it has some kit that tampers the system and prevents it from running, then they could low ball the trade in value and frankly it’s not legal from a federal standpoint, but we do it for cost savings. Who wants to spend $$$ on something that Toyota should be taking action on????

Look up the thread on Tundratalk. Pretty sure you can pull both battery terminals off and reset it. Then unhook the sensor. You end up having lights on the dash but no pump issue

If you repair the system, SDHQ makes some breather hoses which relocate the pump intakes to the engine bay and out of the fender well. Be warned that they're proud of those few feet of hose and filters.

I figured. I’ll just get this whole thing fixed and call it a day while I have the funds. I just hope that it doesn’t fail again a year or so down the road.

That's an insane waste of money unless you live in a state with extremely strict inspections. Even then, the nicer of the bypass kits would likely pass just fine.

It happens to mostly the second generations, some first generations may get it as well. It can happen regardless of the engine. Tbh, some people have better luck than others, like my buddy has the 2013 and never had that issue thus far. I haven’t heard much about the 2014+.

I know it’s dumb to pay out a lot of money, but once the dealership finishes the repair, I might consider installing the bypass kit just to prevent it from happening again. According to them, it still had the original parts, water messed up and cause it to corrode and that I need the 2 pumps, valve assembly, snorkel cover, air inlet tube, the pipe gasket, clamp, hose

@JRS We appreciate you spreading the word about the Hewitt Tech SAIS Bypass Kit. We may be a little biased but honestly believe it is the option to the failure prone system which is inevitable on Tundras. @NickG if you ever have any questions do not hesitate to contact us.
