    Howdy!

Took first long trip with new RV today 7000lb Airstream! All went just fine till last downhill stretch.

Less than 6% grade for the most part and I went easy as I could. I down shifted to keep brakes cool keeping MPH between 25 and 45. I'd basically keep in 4th, hit brakes for less than 5 seconds modulating and then drop to 3rd if need be. On slow curve all the way to 2nd. RPM's hung around 3000 so not an issue BUT...

I'd basically have to hit the brakes every 30 seconds for ~5 seconds. Maybe 20 times...

Towards the end I got a warning beep and Trac Off flashes on dash. Hitting button doesn't do anything. I stop a few minutes later and restart the Tundra and all's well I guess...

So what happened? Did I get the brakes too hot despite my best efforts? Perhaps I have to crank the trailer brake gain a bit more....

    Opinions please!

    Thanks!

    Yes, your brakes got hot.

How are the brakes on the Airstream? Sounds like they need adjustment or replaced.

They were fine on straight but I guess I need to give a bit more gain to compensate for downhill...They are brand new so maybe just braking in too. Only 500 miles on them and most of that today.

    Thanks!

Please do not take offense to this, just want to cover you completely.

How do you know your brakes on the trailer are good (besides being new)?

    How did you test them?

No offense taken! Thanks for helping!

I drove ~15mph and kept upping the gain unlit they almost locked and backed off one click.... I used the sliders not the brake pedal to do this...so not Tundra brake for adjusting

Perhaps a break in period. it was 100° plus most of the drive but only in the 80°'s when down hill happened.

    Thanks!

Well that certainly sounds like the trailer brakes work.

I usually test from dead stop, use full gain on brakes, then try and pull forward with light throttle.

What year truck, or do you have the craptastic Toyota brake controller or an aftermarket one?

So I do know when the brakes get hot, the traction control will become disabled. This is a safety feature of the traction control system. I believe it's in the manual under 4x4 operation and extended periods of wheel spin.

    2019....

There was no option for a Prodigy when I lasted checked but read something here about one now. Saw that there is an adaptor but looks like splice; not plug and play...Not sure I want to mess with that quite yet...

I'll try your technique and see if I can get better performance in a few days when I roll again.

    Thanks!
