Gentlemen, Howdy from the 2.5 gen side.

I'm having a hell of a time finding a decent 4wd 4.7 05-06 so I'm entertaining 2wd's and doing the conversion myself. I have a buddy do it with his tacoma that's willing to help, but I want someone to verify I got all my ducks in a row. I've seen the 3rd gen 4runner T case swapped in, but I have another friend with a 4th gen 4.7 that did the FJ transfer case swap and I feel like that makes more sense. I'm just second guessing myself, but I think this is it all I need right?

    • 4WD TRANSMISSION (A750F ?)
    • FJ MANUAL TRANSFER CASE
    • 4WD SPINDLES
    • 4WD HUBS
    • FRONT DIFFERENTIAL w/ matching gear ratio (3.91?)
    • CV AXLES
    • FRONT 4WD DRIVESHAFT
    • REAR 4WD DRIVESHAFT
    • EXTEND MANUAL SHIFTER LEVER
    • ADD SWITCH (AUTO DIFF DISCONNECT)
    • 4WD Module (Passenger kickpanel)

I'm not looking to keep it 100% factory. If I can snag a truck for the right price I'd like to sit on the solo motorsports XLT kit and use some of their fabricated components for the swap.

this is ambitious... I think replies are few and far between because non of us would attempt this. How hard have you looked for a truck? it just seems like this swap will be Very expensive. just used spindles alone go for $600-$700 a piece as far as I can tell. not to mention all the time and energy spent cutting/welding/trimming to get everything to fit. at the end of the day you will have a 4WD system that isn't factory. just my thoughts, I've never done this sort of thing so take it with a grain of salt. Good luck man!

I’ve been looking for a decent amount of time. I’m pressed for time just cause my TRD pro is probably totaled. Not really wanting to swap, but I’ve seen a couple trucks for the right price and condition that I can probably swing this swap with granted it all works. All the trucks I’ve been looking at have been sold or picked up by the time I’ve got availability to go look at them.

This right here perfectly encapsulates how I often end up way over budget on projects that ultimately end up defeating the purpose for buying, because they took too long to complete and/or have little nagging issues that leave it looking awesome but not as reliable as what I intended it for.

Sadly I’m no stranger to this which is why I’m even considering tackling this haha. But I am motivated and i have a pretty strong idea of what I’m getting into. Just really want to make sure all the parts work cohesively and I’ll figure it out along the way haha

    This might help:

Lots of good info in his swap thread, he bought a wrecked 4WD for parts.

Best of luck to you and looking forward to seeing the results. Especially on the FJ transfer case swap. That's a dream mod for me!

Thanks! I'm hoping this works. Otherwise I'll sell the truck and pickup a 4wd. Saw a couple videos on 1G sequoias with the FJ t case so I can't imagine it not working. Thinking the most important part is getting the motor/trans combo correct so getting a vvti truck is the ticket.

Check eBay and junkyards. 5G 4R and FJ should be the same thing. Ebay is tracking 400-500 shipped and you just have to cut the hole, get the ADD switch wired up, and extend the shifter.

Yeah, getting a VVTi truck will make it easier to put in an FJ/ Sequoia case. When I did research in the past, the housing on the 4-speed (which I have) is a little bit different than the 5-speed so the FJ case won't mate right up without adapters or welding. This guy put a V2FA from a 4Runner on a 5-speed and there's a bit of a gap.

While the FJ case is preferred, I could possibly use a VF3AM transfer case from a 3rd gen 4-runner/ 01-04 Sequoia. These don't have a torsen center diff though.

Good info brother. I saw the one where there was a gap. Saw a couple videos on sequoias with FJ cases and then bolting right up so all of it make sense to work here. Hoping it’s as smooth as it seems.

You don’t need to be here. I’ve seen your wheeling videos. I’m trying to build a prerunner, but SAS has your name all over it hahaha

I definitely want to be here :D... anything with putting the 4wd system together I want to know every bit of info/knowledge even if it doesn't directly apply to my truck.
