Newbie from MD asking for your opinion.

    2003 Tundra 2WD Automatic 3.4L

Transmission input shaft seal leaking like crazy. After taking down the transmission and pulling out the torque converter and stubbled upon this.

The ring around the torque converter shaft. Is this normal? Feels like it’s been rubbing.

Went to the local Toyota dealership - and couldn’t get answer. Kept hearing “we don’t work on these that much....”
Smh... anyways - anything would help.

Update : turns out the answer is no.
Bad torque converter and also bad trans pump. The ring around the converter - belongs to the pump. Problem solved. Smh

Good that you were able to figure it out. Sorry about the bad news though.

    Some.
Glad you figured out that it is not normal.
    It is the input bushing.

Yeah - looks like I’m getting a used transmission. But I do have a little question. While shopping for the torque converter and trans pump, seems like the parts are interchangeable with the V8 trans as well. If I purchased a a3040e trans from a v8 - after changing the bell housing, will it work on the v6? Some people say yes and some say no. And I’m talking about counter parts people.

Hmm. Usually we try to keep the v8 transmissions on v8s and v6s on the 6s. But technically it should be interchangeable. I think the bellhousings might be the same too.

Biggest difference is the torque converter stall that I can think of. Maybe gearing

Thanks for all the info. The torque converter is the same part number for v6 and v8. But the gearing does worry me. Thanks again for the help. @empty_lord @Darkness @FirstGenVol

If you believe Wikipedia, the gearing for all A340E / 30-40LE (2wd applications) is the same, regardless of engine or even vehicle it's used in....

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_A_transmission#A340E_(30-40LE)

Same goes for the A340F (4wd applications)....

Yeah I saw that. Just to make it easier , I went this morning and pulled a trans from 03 tundra v6 RWD. I’ll deal with all that gearing research when I covert her to a v8 4wd. Just need to get it back on the road and thru inspection.
Thanks for looking that up @speedtre

Yea that ring is the Pump Bushing so your pump seal and maybe even the pump body could be bad that happens cause it over heated definitely inspect transmission internals before putting a pump and torque converter in it sucks to do the job twice
