So I’ve owned almost every Toyota 4wd every made (1st gen tundra, 1st gen Tacoma 2nd gen Tacoma 3rd gen Tacoma 2nd gen tundra 3rd gen 4Runner and a few 5th gen 4Runner and a few “hilux” or pre Tacoma Toyota pickups and I couldn’t help but notice when searching for them and even now that 4wd 1st gen tundras are the most rare, 90 percent of them for sale are 2wd which really hurts the soul and sadly most of the 4wd for sale have been in accidents and just rough shape which I get they’re almost 30 years old but the owners defiantly drove them hard and put them away wet, but I digress. Would be interesting to see how many 4wd first gens were made compared to 2wd

It’s probably more that no one wants to sell a 4wd, and when they do, they get scooped up fast

It could also be your location too- in SoCal it's much more common to find 2WD trucks. I'm also from the IE and have always noticed way more 2WDs

“over landing” is huge in SoCal one of the biggest areas in the us probably so people here love their 4wd if it was Florida or Texas where you have no mountains or really places to off-road I could see the lack of demand but the demand is here for sure. Only guys here with the 2wd tundras are majority older Latino dudes who used it for gardening or just want a solid rig

If mine were 2wd, i’da pawned if off for pennies. But since its 4wd, it fit between my 2wd titan & 4wd cherokee. Around town i take the titan. 19ish mpg, but if i have my dog, i take the tundra. Completely took over the jeeps roll. And does it better because its bigger.

Haha so true about the gardening trucks. I live on the coast now and notice a fair amount of 2WDs used by surfers for their boards.

Oh ok that makes sense always wanted to paddle out at steamers lane or rincon. I surfed my entire adult life yet only surf my handful of small spots kinda a shame

If 4x4 models are less common/more desirable on the used market that's good news if, like me, you plan to sell and get a new Tundra. I suspect the 8' bed on mine will reduce that prospect, somewhat.

No flames intended. I had 33.5 tall skinny mud tires on my 2wd, non posi 5spd v6. I took it on some pretty rough stuff. Through some dry washes and some decent up downs embankments. These rigs are very capable even for 2wd. That said, steep climb or off camber stuff will get you stuuuuckkkkk. I don’t muck with snow beyond a dusting, so I can’t even imagine 2wd in those conditions. Where I’m at 4wd gets ya way more off the path, but mostly just for the low gears and traction.
I think the 2wd trucks were made and sold in greater volume, also 4wd trucks likely got more used up and or deteriorated. So there’s less inventory. Any hows, run what ya brung. Later
