Hey folks just finished my install of the complete Dobinsons MRR kit. I’ll post some more pictures and let you guys know what setting I’m running after I dial it in.

I would think they will do just fine. Dobinsons have been running suspension components since 1953. I have no doubt that they will last longer than a fox or king assembly but time will tell!

    I love them!

Is that hose routed right above the bumpstop for the rear?

They look nice. I wish OME or Dobinson would offer a 0" lift. I'd like better suspension but really have no need for a lift.

No it’s in front of the bump stop bracket, bad picture on my behalf.

I really like the ride I have set up for road use and I tow a 20’ bass boat most times as well.

can’t wait to take it on some northern washed out roads.

Looks great, nice work. I've been considering Dobinsons myself, but kind of in the same boat as _none_, just not sure if I want a lift. Had a lift on my F-150 and it kind of makes things a bit more difficult for me in my use of the truck and hauling stuff around.

+1 for wanting a no-lift setup option from Dobinsons.

I tried it - or rather tried to stick to 1” of lift - and was chastised by Dobinson. Thing is, the shock body itself is set up to run 0” of lift from a threaded body/collar perspective. The preload collar setting has room to fully engage threads on the shock body, put tension on a coil, and utilize a standard 16”x3.0ID coil such as can be had from Eibach in a multitude of spring rates. AFAIK, most of Dobinsons spring offerings for our trucks are linear rate coils so there should be zero issues using a different brand coul (again, I was also chastised for using my Eibach coils).

I suspect the 2-3” minimum lift comes from one possible issue - the shock bodies might not offer good bottom out resistance so running too low of ride height could might not give the shock adequate time/travel to dampen the motion and cause the shock to bottom. It’s possible that they are relying on the coil to bind before the piston stroke is fully collapsed. This is speculation, but I don’t think it would be too hard to do the maths and figure it out. I don’t recall if Dobinson provides compressed/extended lengths, but I recall my literature giving some reference dimensions for setting preload collar height correctly. It wouldn’t be to hard to put the other pieces together and see if that’s actually an issue.

I was simply told after the fact that my horrible ride was due to not enough height and using a different coil that wasn’t Dobinson. Really, it was that their recommended damping settings were far from correct.

There may be some truth to zoned damping like Bilsteins new 8112 shocks that require 2.25” minimum height to operate correctly, but that’s more of bypass shock feature I would be expect to find on the Dobinsons or most other 2.5” body shocks unless explicitly listed. As their damping logic was explained to me - the adjustments rely on shaft speed and not position unless very close to either extreme of piston travel - which is a product of most any floating piston remote reservoir design since the pressures between the pistons increases exponentially at either end of the shock shaft travel. I could be wrong about that, though.

But I agree - a stock height shock would be fantastic.

Looking forward to hearing more about the ride and how you like these. I’ve been tempted to get them. I just can’t make my mind up.

Gents, you can get nicer than stock shocks for your tundra that do not give any lift. You don’t have to lift the truck to get a better than stock ride.

Bilstien 5100 is a great shock and will do factory height and are awesome struts. granted Robinson may not make any but that’s not their wheel house and honestly the three or 4 of you on here are probably the only ones who would buy them. I wouldn’t spend the coin to upgrade my suspension without any lift.l especially at this price.

    Just a thought or two.

Torn between the ims and the mrr.

Yes, there are lots of stock height shocks available, but as good as 5100’s are (I’ve run them and currently have them on my sequoia), they aren’t close to the same league as MRR’s.

I agree but they are worlds better than stock and are a great option for those who don’t want to lift. I just hate for people to ride around on crappy stock struts and shocks. But the 5100 and ome coils are pretty awesome. But I prefer the doninson ims to the 5100/ome lift no doubt.

@Dew the setup looks sick. Are those aftermarket leaf springs too?

Hey folks, I wanted to give you guys some feedback. Since installing the MRR kit I have had zero issues with them. I’ve driven from Florida to Texas and back towing my 20’ bass boat. I like to stiffen up the ride when towing and when I’m not I soften things up.

Next big thing I must do is upgrade the brakes as the stock rotors and pads which were practically new did not like some hard braking I’ve had to do. I’m probably going with DBAs or Cyro treating slotted rotors and hawk pads. Also stainless brake lines all around I will never install drilled rotors on a vehicle ever again.

I’ll be installing the 38 gal tank too I had filling up every 3 hours when towing.

You'll be very happy with the 38 gallon tank. I lucked out when I got my truck and out of the 3 tundras on the lot at the time, the one I was most interested in happened to have the 38 gal tank. I didn't know how much I would appreciate it at the time, but it's been amazing.

Did you have any wheel fitment issues with the reservoirs?

This kit is on my short list for upgrading my current setup, but the website says that +18 or less offset is necessary to clear the reservoirs. I'm curious what your experience is?

I had no issues clearing stock +60mm wheels.

EDIT: I forgot to note that I needed to relocate the front reservoirs and clock them for clearance.

I have no wheel or tire fitment issues. My wheels are 18” with a +15 backspacing. My tires are 275/70R18. I have lots of room to run larger tires but I average 14.4L/100km when not towing and around 18.2L/100kms towing.
