I've been able to look a few "tunes" that have been posted online, and I am surprised how many aren't much more than changing throttle limits similar to the "tow mode" and a small tweak to the power enrichment tables...

For those of you that have gotten off-the-shelf tunes,, did you get a detailed list of change points? Have you been happy with the results?

That’s the issue with some of the popular tuners. When you go I depth ask g what they actually change, it’s mostly the throttle pedal. That’s the biggest change you can make in a tune. Toyota didn’t leave much on the table. That said, gabbing the ability to change up the tune how you want the truck to drive is worth the $$. That’s why I’ve always sold Bullydog for an otherwise ‘stock-ish’ truck.

Most “tuners” only tweak throttle pedal and maybe add a degree or two of timing. There really aren’t massive changes to be had with stock vehicles of most manufacturers. I spend most of my time in the part throttle timing maps as you can get some decent gains in mileage there. I’ve gotten a .7mpg bump so far and I’ve gotten rid of a lot of weird valleys in the timing map overall which has smoothed out the power and throttle response. I spend a little bit of time on the wot timing but really it’s a degree or two and not much else. I’ve adjusted MAF voltages for my intake to the truck is more dialed in with the fuel it needs to add or subtract. Keep in mind that there are a LOT of things you can change but unless you are supercharged, there’s not much you need to change.

For me, I spend most of my time adjusting the transmission and dialing that in. That’s where there is usually a lot left on the table in my opinion. Adjusting shift points, shift timing, pressures, converter lockup.

DAP states it improves shift points, removes the governor, and adds ~20 HP. Anything else is a bonus (some ppl state improved fuel economy)

My first logs on a 2016 Sequioa for a WOT pull show, at 5000rpms, 24degrees advance and 11.96 AFRs... that would be pretty sweet if I was running 8 lbs of boost. But for a modern NA DOHC v8, that is pig-rich and pretty retarded timing, me thinks.

Between leaning it out to 12.5, maybe 13.0 AFR and finding and getting rid of all the torque limiting nannies, I think a tune is really going to wake this engine up..

I haven't done anything with the transmission yet... I'm going to start studying up on that... so far, I'm kinda surprised how little the torque converter actually locks up...

I would expect any tune to give a description of what's changed. Most stock based tunes don't do much from the sounds of it though.

I need to pony up and get an AFR gauge. Just haven't really dug in to that part of the tune.
