I want to get some feedback from owners of 3rd Gens with the 4.6 V8. The 5.7 gets all the love on this site and I am curious about the 4.6 especially a 4x4 version. Any inherent reliability issues? Hoping to have those chime in with some real world testing with higher mileage vehicles. Are they as reliable as 5.7? I assume no Cam Tower issues.

My coworker has an 07 like mine except with the 4.6. His has 150K miles+. Totally stock 4X4 with 8ft bed. Loves it. Has had it 4 years now. Only had new brake pads put on. He has been off for the last 2 days. Tomorrow I'll ask his opinion and post his thoughts.

Thanks for the response and I look forward to what your friend has to say. I recently picked up an 18 with the 5.7. My son really wants a Tundra but doesn't really need the 5.7. He wants to save some bucks.

Heck, I just found out here yesterday that the "Grade" Tundra came with an optional V-6 up to 2013. Nothing wrong considering the 4.6 V-8 at all. No doubt a very reliable motor!

Actually an 07 is a 4.7 not a 4.6. Different engine family. Those old 4.7's were great engines. I believe that's the one in the 1.4 million mile Tundra.

Only 82k on mine and it isn’t 4x4.

Haven’t done a thing besides oil changes and tire rotations. Love the truck but if I did it over I would get the 5.7 with 4x4 for the few times I would have used it. Nothing wrong with the 4.6 if you don’t need the extra power or don’t want to spend the extra $$ though.

I’d love to know what the highest mileage 4.6 on the road is. I made a thread asking just that several months ago and didn’t get any replies.

We got a '14 with >50k and the 4.6 is fault less. Cam tower may leak a bit but no issues in the 8 months we had her....and no 4x4 here but we are thinking hard of trading up to 4x4 and the 5.7 mostly because the wife and I want a travel trailer.

Do the 4.6's have Cam Tower leaks as well? Both of you above mention 2x4's. Is it possible to get a 4.6 with 4x4? Keep em coming.

My dad drives a '14 DC 4.6 4x4 with around 140k on the clock. It's been flawless. Other than routine maintenance, tires and a headlight bulb it hasn't cost him a dime.

Cant really speak to reliability as my 4.6 2wd only has 36k. But if i can say one thing, your son should just get the 5.7 unless its a screamin good deal on the 4.6.

I just traded in my 2013 4x4 it had the 4.6 L and 85,000 miles. Never stuck, or anything other than oil changes every 5k with Mobil1 and a Wix filter. Towed my V-8 jet boat almost every week up hill to the lakes as fast as I wanted. The 4.6 gets better mileage and off road is just as capable as the 5.7 I now have. Empty it's just as capable doing anything, don't let anyone tell you different. The only reason I wanted a new truck was it's going to be towing my 25' trailer and Honda Quad in the bed. The 4.6 and the 5.7 have the same 3.7" bore, the 5.7 has a longer stroke. Everthing else on the trucks are identical in every way. A factory GM engineer told me the shorter stroke motor will last longer and rev higher. I had a lot of Chevy 327 motors and it's just as capable in every way. I bought it new in 2013 for 31k and -0.9% financing. Best truck I ever owned and tougher.
It's more reliable than the 5.7 and gets better MPG's

Some good reviews. I think the reason he doesn't mind the 4.6 is that I don't really see him towing more than 5000 lbs. No real need to for the 5.7. He says he wishes that Toyota still made the 4.7 as those were pretty bulletproof.

    '14.. 4.6 here
    125,000 miles
    no issues.
    completely satisfied with performance
typically loaded down with construction tools & supplies, does everything I need it to when asked

    18 to 20 mpg.
that's a cost savings over the 5.7 every time you visit the gas pump

Slayer thanks for chiming in. Have you towed anything behind it with some considerable weight? How did it perform?

133k on my 2014 DC 4.6 4x4. Mind you, I bought it with 131k on it but service records were good, nothing other than maintenance done to it. Also diagnostics looked great on it. Toyota service did tell me that the cam towers were “seaping” - but said it’s not something to be concerned about yet as it could do another 100k without becoming an issue, but something to keep an eye on. So time will tell!

I have a 2010 Toyota Tundra double cab 4.6 l it is now November 2022 and I'm pushing 180,000 MI still drives like it's brand new needed a water pump at 86,000 miles other than that perfect truck no problems at all just put brakes on it tires and a battery other than that runs super smooth and hoping to put another $180,000 miles on it. I just can't seem to find any other thread with a high mileage 4.6 l motor from a tundra and it's strange I saw one that had 450,000 miles but it wasn't on the thread that was the 4.6 l that came out in 2010 not the 4.7 pre 2010 4.6 that had 450,000 miles on it still running great

2016 with 96k miles. Had the transfer case actuator replaced under warranty at 72k. Running 275's and milage sucks. Avg of 14.5 mpg, Trans is never happy in a gear unless it is level road and no headwind. If I could do it over again, I would get the 5.7. The 4.6 needs higher rpms to make anything it seems.

I just sold my 2000 with the 4.7 and 223,000. Nothing wrong with the engine or transmission in that time. I am sure the young kid I sold it to will get a bunch more miles out of it. I know it doesn't address you question specifically, but thought it would be another good data point especially if your son is wanting to save some bucks.
