On all the Tacoma’s I’ve owned I took off the quick detach tailgate hinge, bent a piece of metal on my press, welded in in and reinstalled the hinge. To prevent tailgate theft.

So this morning it’s finally warmed up enough that I feel like doing some things in the shop and I think I’ll just do the same to my Tundra hinge to make me feel better. Then I get to looking at my tailgate and this registers. Do all 3rd gens have locking tailgates?

I had a 2014 SR5, that I unfortunately wrecked, it had a locking tailgate. My 2017 SR5 has one as well.

Certainly easy to steal when unlocked and unattended at Home Depot for example...

We had a lot of theft of tailgates going on in Texas, so I not only lock it frequently, added a tailgate hinge lock and the Pop-n-lock electric lock that opens with the remote whenever I unlock the passenger doors. Was this overkill? Perhaps, but it keeps me from forgetting to lock the tailgate and was a fun project to do. :)
