Disabling "nannies" for MPG?

Is there anyone who has tested this put? will turning off trac /vsc/lim slip improve mpg at all? also how about the tow haul button? I assume that changes shift ppints and will only hurt MPG.

 

Think of it like this, turning on both limited slip and tow haul engages BEAST MODE. not really something I expect to have great gas mileage on. by the way, it's a lot of fun to pull up next to a ricer with a glued on spoiler and a coffee can muffler and just dust his ass with beast mode engaged.

 

I did it for half a tank and noticed the "average mpg" reading was higher than normal. I am currently in the middle of a tank running nanny free. "Average mpg" reading is showing higher than normal, but I trust my own math more than the truck's reading. I'll let you know when I fill up. Unofficial results are about 3/4 a mile per gallon higher.

Sorry I haven't posted, I just got back from a business trip and finished off this tank.

I traveled 443.6 miles
Displaced 31.34 gallons
For 14.15 MPG

My truck told me I pulled off 14.7 MPG

This might be the best tank I've had since owning the truck for a year now, but not by a lot. I think I'll keep playing with it and the sport shifting.

After driving without nannies, I don't like running with them on now. It's like driving against the wind or through a layer of mud. I will go back when we start getting the snow and ice, but until then, nannie free for me.

 

Did you temporarily disable them somehow or do you go through the process of turning them all off each time you start the truck?

To turn all of them off you just press button once, then hold for 3 sec, then hold for another 3 sec right?

Based on your finds I think I might try it out for a tank.

 

I go through the whole process you just laid out, then I turn on tow/haul mode. Yes, I run through this every time I start the truck.

Maybe the next tank I play with, I'll leave tow/haul off.

 

So for clarification, 3 total presses of the button? I thought just 2 3-second presses. Mine says "Traction control off" after 2 punches but LSD is lit in red.

 

One push, then 2 push and holds for 3 seconds.

Curious as to how disabling TC and stability control would give someone better gas mileage. Wouldn't that do the opposite?

 

Traction control uses the brakes to stop wheel spin, but unless it is actually engaging a bit I can't see how that feature would affect MPG.

If anything I would assume Tow/Haul will hurt MPG due to keeping the truck in a lower gear longer=higher RPM's=more gas.

 

Interesting. I kind of figured TC would pull timing like most other TC systems. Good to know.

 

Higher RPMs is not directly correlated to using more gas - engine load needs to be taken into consideration. Best example of this would be final drive ratios and tire sizing, yes you could be turning a higher RPM but the engine is actually working less, more freely roatating.

 

I've been running the last couple of tanks with nannies off and getting a few tenths better mileage. Maybe switching off controllers reduces alternator drag?

 

Has anyone compared sport shifting vs automatic (nannies on) in terms of mpg? I would think since u are controlling the shifting mpg would be better similar to driving manual?

 

It wouldn't be any different. And using it doesn't change your shift pattern it just keeps the transmission from going any higher than the gear you selected. Short shifting in S mode doesn't make the transmission shift any sooner.
I actually use S mode every day. But just because I don't want the truck hunting for gears driving in traffic. I don't like it going into overdrive and then stepping on the gas to have a downshift immediately. Intown I typically drive in S 4 or 5. And I like it for off-road Ing using it as a hill descend. Same thing when driving down mountain roads to help save the brakes.

 

I notice a couple tenths per gallon better with nannies off. If nothing else it turns off those electronic systems which may be reducing alternator drag?

I downshift all the time to save brakes.

 

I know this is an old thread but, will disabling the nannies and using tow/haul mode be bad for my new truck (just over 500 miles)?

 

Isn’t this in the book? I recall a 1000 or 3000 mile break in. Maybe I am misremembering though.

I think it's ok to push the buttons but I also think they recommend a break in before towing

I just did my first full throttle 1/4 mile run- no nannies and haul/ass mode last sat nite on way to local dirt track- boy howdy
YEEEE HAUL!!!- @ 700 miles

 

I'll probably wait until after 1k miles to turn the nannies off and go full BEAST mode (350 miles to go)
