On my 2021 Tundra, I recently noticed after my last fill-up that it was reading that I have 605 miles of range. Normally I have about 400-450 depending on my driving. I also noticed my gauge was at about a 1/4 of a tank and the digital numbers showed I had almost 200 miles of range which seems way above normal for me. Is there a way to factory reset the number so it reads what is actually in my tank or should I rely on the normal (Full, 1/2, Empty) gauge?

Not sure on a solution for this but more so coming to reinforce the OP with my personal experience. I’ve been having the same issue on my ‘14, it reads I have about “350 Miles to Empty” from full, but A. I remember it used to only say around 270-280 miles to empty. Then B. I’ve been messing with the trip settings on the odometer and have started resetting my “Trip B” every time I fill up. On weeks where I have accidentally ran the truck to damn near empty according to the analog gas gauge, but I’ll only have ended up driving about 250 miles on that tank. For a while I was just brushing it off because with any sort of technology, especially tech that is 10 years old, I always expect it to be a little off. But now that I just saw this thread pop up and I know it’s not just me experiencing the issue, I figured I’d throw in my two cents.

So you’re both suddenly getting better mileage?

No that's the thing. It somehow believes I now have an extra 150-200 miles of range for the same amount of gas.

So I wonder if something had changed with the computer knowing how much fuel is in the tank? I have a 38 gallon tank but only 31ish usable?

I don't have the 38-gallon tank so I would assume there is an electronic error somewhere cause the analog is usually pretty close.

Disconnect the battery and the computer is overly optimistic for the next few fills.

that extra 'keeps the fuel pump cool'

i'm almost always between 560 and 570 distance to empty on fill up. and depending what/where i'm driving it'll adjust as I go. computer tank average is typically plus/minus 0.3 mpg. i normally end between 540 (18mpg) and 600 (20mpg) combined between trip A and range remaining. normally fill up with 30-70 range left

it took a few tanks from when i got the truck for it to even out and be as accurate as it is.

when I put on lift/tires/bumper etc i'll disconnect the battery and let it relearn as @vtl mentioned knowing the first few tanks will be off

I just had a battery replaced by the dealership and noticed the issue after that. Should I take it back there or just do this disconnect?

That's quite surprising unless you have the 38 gallon tank which I don't so the most I've ever seen is about 475 miles of range. Also, I'd love to know how you average 18mpg because when I cruise at around 75-80 (I live in MT where that is the speed limit) I get around 15-17 at most on a completely stock truck.

The battery replacement caused it. Drive it for a few tanks and it'll come back down. Removing/disconnecting the battery resets it and it takes time to figure it out again.

I drive nannies off. Tow/Haul for mountain passes. And don't floor it everywhere. Stock as well but 285/65 wildpeaks. Proper tire pressure.

Just did a trip from Denver to Crested Butte and back in a day. 20.3 hand calculated round trip.

When I go to the office it's 22 miles highway at 65-70 and 5 miles local roads at 40ish. 19mpg is pretty normal

Well I guess I need to drive a bit more conservatively. Thank you.

Oh, so the truck will pretty much recalibrate itself then? I've noticed that at the higher numbers it's reading the numbers seem to go down way faster than what it used to. I assume that is the truck already recalibrating itself.

I drove from NJ to MT for school and I averaged fully loaded with my belongings in the bed and cruising around 75-85 majority of the time 14-16 so pretty spot on assumption.

I really don’t give a crap about the mileage. When my truck needs gas, I fill it up.

No, maybe in the OP’s case, but for me it is displaying more gas but I’m burning it quicker according to the information display, so it’s a lot worse lol.

Yeah, like I said, it really isn’t that big of a deal to me. I’ve been brushing it off for a while and only decided to finally speak up about it because I saw someone else experiencing the same thing. At the end of the day I just switch the information display to another screen and forget about it, it’s really just knitpicking.

IDAF either but it is still nice on a long trip to be able to plan how far you can get before a fill is needed.

You said it perfectly. I love my tundra for road trips, but I’d rather not be gambling with when I’m going to run empty 200 miles from home; and when the truck already gets 12.3mpg with only a 28gal fuel tank from factory.

I can’t sit for 5 hrs at a stretch, so I visit the restrooms & usually top off my tank.

Oh trust me I get that completely, but I feel like the receipt from the gas station hurts more than holding it in for another hundred miles…

The fact they disconnected the battery when they replaced it is why you have the issue as previously stated.
Give a it few tanks of gas to recalculate everything..

You don't have to disconnect the battery to reset it, just RTFM..
