    Hey all,

Finally switching out my 3rd today from ECGS. Was all fairly straightforward, was looking for issues or damage anywhere and I did find this which is interesting.

Looks like a chunk of diff housing broke off at some point? There was no leaks with the old one , so I'm guessing not too concerning?

I haven’t had mine apart, but I’m not convinced that’s broken. Looks intentional?

Especially if you look at the lip behind it which has an oddly similar shape machined into it. And it looks machined to me, both.

Yea now that I'm seeing that I'm thinking same thing actually. Such a weird shape but definitely looks the same

Looks like the same machining is on the opposite side as well.

No doubt that factory notch is there so that the girdles/bearing caps on the 3rd member can slip past that particular spot. It’s toyota’s round hole square plug technology.

The same notch (2, actually) are on the factory gasket as well.

(the magnets are holding my gasket on the side of my tool box to prevent damage until I'm ready to use it...just in case you were wondering what you're looking at)

Looks like intentional machining to me.

I was thinking it was for a Elocker rear end, but not sure if 8.4s came with a Elocker for a different model. I just did my diffs and didn’t notice/pay attention
