As some of you know, in March I bought a daily driver to 1) save some miles on the Tundra (which I know they can run for over a million miles, but what's the hurry?!) and 2) save on gas in the long run with the expectation that fuel may go up at some point.

The car is a 2002 Subaru Legacy with 204.6K miles. I'm starting to lose confidence in the car; still runs great, but each day that passes I get more worried that it will leave me stranded and my wife would have to rescue me in the Tundra. It needs a new catalytic converter, you can smell burning oil after driving back and forth to work (according to dealer it needs a new head, giggity, gasket). Almost over heated on me on a 90+ degree day and ever so often the lights flicker indicating there is an electrical issue somewhere.

So I'm debating turning it in along when we trade in my wife's car for a new vehicle; extra down so to speak. The dealer will give me $500 for it. Here is the math showing what I paid vs what I estimate I have gotten out of the car:

Based on my math, it looks like I am a positive $385 on this original "investment" of $2,000. Not sure how much more than $500 I could get from Craigslist if I decided to sell there vs trading in to Toyota.

What do y'all think? Did I get my money's worth from this car based on my analysis or was it a poor decision from the get go? LOL. Is it time to move on from this daily driver or keep riding until the wheels fall of?

My math tells me to let it go and that is what I'm leaning towards. Thoughts?

Go Craigslist for 1k and work your way down. Dealership money is all buy mine for this and I'll give you this much for yours bs. If you go dealership do the deal with the one trade of your wife's car then when they do the buyers order on the agreed upon price tell them you decided to do the other car and want 500 for it as well. Watch them back peddel and look all we can't do that now and shit.
If you can keep it until income tax refund time you could probably sell it quick for good money. Just my .02.

I think you did. Next time, buy a commuter that gets way better mileage, doesn't have 200K unknown miles on it, and definitely not a Subaru with a 2.5 engine.

So please elaborate on how you calculated the wear and tear costs.

Wear and tear is based on miles driven X reimbursement rate of $0.55 per mile.
