Hello all, I’m trying to see if anyone else in here has opted for some custom springs to hold the added weight of overland gear and can tell me exactly what spec they went with. Currently I am running a set of deaver 748u springs and they can’t hold my weight up like i would like anymore. There is nothing wrong with the ride other than i have lost height and need more leafs to accommodate. I would like to know what others running heavy setups are running? I’m not wanting to add air bags or sumo springs as they limit travel when I’m off road. currently I’m running as follows..

*Are cx had shell u sure of weight?
    *freespirit tent 180lbs
    *ovs awning 60lbs
    *high lifter jack 40lbs
    *5 gal waterport 50lbs
    *dometic cfx3 55 with slide 60/70lbs
*full size spare 35x12.5 maybe 70 lbs
*added gear for camping maybe 100lbs

I’m thinking i am up around the 7-800lb mark now and the springs just can’t hold the weight like i would like. Thank you all for your input.

I have a static load of about 1100lb.
The solution was a gradual progression through 2 years, lots of research and evolving efforts. Here’s a rough breakdown

    SDHQ hidden winch mount 60lb
    Xeon warn 10K winch. 80lb
    SDHQ sliders 100lb
48g transfer flow fuel tank 250lb
    Snugtop shell 210lb
    RCI Transfercase skidplate 40lb
    Decked Drawer system 210lb
    Tools/recovery/survival. 180lb

During the time I was doing research, I used icon leafs to give me a little help, knowing they were not the long term solution.

Spent some time with Deaver and toytec but they were absolutely no help at all. In fact, they made recommendations that would have worsened the problem.

I called and talked with Alcan. They fixed me up with custom leaf packs that preserve the smooth ride and give me about- 1/2” of rake for when I tow a boat or trailer

I am running a similar setup. I also have rci full skids/rrw sliders and am about to install my C4 hybrod bumper/apex 12k winch/ prinsu rack. Can you give me any insight as to what your Allan spring pack consists of? Thanks for responding man!

    Matt,
The weight is off balance‘side to side’, because of the battery, transferflow tank and driver’s weight. To a lesser degree, this effects most tundras, causing the notorious tundra lean.
The springs designed for me by Alcan have 9 leafs on the driver’s side and 8 on the passenger side. It’s level now.

I have heard that Alcan has changed management. Am not sure about that. If true, it’s possible that their service and ability might have changed.

I’m currently in talks with Alcan on getting custom springs. Going to get the Orbit Eyes and Alcan will need to make custom shackles for it. I’ve gone through 2 sets of Deavers, Skyjackers, and now I’m on Icon RXT option 3. Save yourself the trouble and just email Alcan, bypass the quote form.

The most important information you can provide them is the weight of your truck at each axle, or better yet at each wheel, loaded (all your gear) and unloaded (daily driving).

Pump the brakes. With the weight you carry there is no other reasonable option. I did everything possible with 2.25” leaf springs, nothing would hold. Had to re-arch/rebuild annually, can’t do that. Have to go SUA though, bit of a commitment.

I don’t believe that is accurate. It might be true in your case, and perhaps it’s related to the way you drive; taking fast runs through woops and pushing the full range of the spring arch frequently. Mine show no need for replacement or rearching and they have been on for a couple years

Yeah, it’s the crazy weight + wild driving. But Cruzer just posted his trucks weight recently and she’s a big gal. 3” springs is the way.

@Mrf1987 don’t try dialing in your solution without knowing your actual weight. Find a cat scale and do front axle + rear axle, loaded as you go out on a trip. The amount of guessing you already have built in, not knowing what that topper weighs… armor you don’t think about… humans and dogs, firewood, food, water… you gotta know what weight you carry, then Alcan can build you custom leafs. Or Deaver can sell you 3”.

I knew that, but I’ve grown tactful.

I carry about 500lbs daily, up to 750 and it rides pretty damn good. I’ve had this setup for about a year with no issues. It’s the U748 pack with an extra leaf per Deaver’s recommendation with TC shackles.

So after doing more research and bouncing a bunch of questions off of the Alcan team, I decided I’m going to stick with the custom Alcans. The 3” wide springs were very tempting but at the end of the day my truck was built to go slow and tackle obstacles so I want the flex that the stock width springs provide. The springs will be made to carry the loads that I have. Not gonna hit whoops, not gonna send it - all that additional force goes beyond the rating of the spring. And if these Alcans do flatten out then I have the wider springs to fallback to.

How much weight would you say you are carrying?

Daily driving weight is with tools and a full size spare plus armor = 7200lbs

When I drove down to Tundras to Sedona with camping gear, spare parts and what not = 8340lbs

I spoke with Tyler from alcan today, very professional and very friendly. He suggested against the 3” springs, he explained how they may affect the articulation etc etc
