Just looking for some input here now that DB has the switchback.

current DB owners would you have bought the switchback if it were available when you bought?

if I go with a clamshell cover I will buy the HD. but before I do I’m rethinking the switchback.

Both will serve my needs, but each has strengths and weaknesses.

My current truck has a soft roll up. So considering the past 11 years utilizing a tonneau cover:

    1. Primary use to keep cottage stuff dry. We’ve never had anything not fit under the cover.

    2. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve absolutely needed to “remove” the cover for full bed access.

    3. Secondary use is security. Think while on a road trip making a purchase at a store. Instead of going back to the hotel we throw the stuff in the bed and go for lunch. The casual meth head with a knife won’t be grabbing my stuff.

    4. Cover will be used for “over flow”. There’s been a few occasions where we either took 2 vehicles to the cabin, or stuff, had to come next time because of no room.

    5. I will likely never need more than 400 lbs capability (switchback).

personally I like the switchback look over the clamshell. Both styles will give me security.

HD has 2 additional locks to worry about (forget to lock). Switchback if I forget to lock tailgate it can be stolen.

switchback way easier for one person removal (not likely needed)

switchback you need to use “loop” ratchet straps because it uses anchor plates. Can’t use regular ratchets (or you can use soft tie downs in conjunction with ratchets).

99% of the time I just need secure, dry transport for the bed. I may likely never need to transport anything on top.

the cost difference does not factor into the decision.

given that the switchback is new would you guys have bought one if it were available?

Bed covers are highly subjective, and we all have our unique needs.

anyway just thought I’d do a bit of a brain storm and bounce some ideas around .

I looked at it. I like the ability to open the normal diamond back like a trunk lid without opening the tailgate. The switchback you have to drop the gate and undo the 2 latches

Valid point. Out of curiousity why not just drop the tailgate, and throw whatever into the bed?
