Have been shopping for one this week. May try a cheap 4K one just to try (<$50)
Many on Amz. Specifically one w/o a screen and fully control and viewable on a phone app. (So I don’t have to fiddle with the cam)

    Yes, I did that.
    Vantru N4 dash cam
I also used a tray insert instead of mounting it directly to the dash

Are you happy with it? Any negatives? Also, is that cig plug always hot? I have not tested it yet.

No negatives for me. Plug shuts off with ignition.

I had mine mounted on the dash using the ICS mount for a very long time (1st pic) until I upgraded to a Garmin Mini 2 with a more minimalist mount (2nd pic).

Thx for the info. That one is a little pricier than I wanted as a tester.

I don’t have any complaints. It’s small. It records. I don’t notice it while driving. Checks the boxes for me.

The only thing I did to improve it was I added the Garmin polarized lens cover. I drive directly east in the morning and west in the afternoon, so my commute is always facing the sun. The polarized lens went a long way to improving the image quality while driving into the sun.

Do you notice any significant difference between mounting a cam on the dash as opposed to behind the mirror (as far as what the cam captures)? I have a Garmin 47 mounted behind my mirror but am considering moving it to the dash.

Depends on the FOV of the camera, I suppose. When my old cam was on the dash, I had to have it tilted up at an angle of probably 15 or 20 degrees. Otherwise the hood took up half the frame. Windshield mounting is much better IMO, unless the camera is designed to be mounted low (like the Ring DashCam).

My 2 cents based on my old camera. YMMV

Makes sense. I guess I'll just leave mine as is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it I suppose.

Is it pretty straight forward to connect the Garmin Mini 2 with after market dongle to jump the power from the rear view mirror? I had that setup in another truck and haven’t venture yet to attempt to take apart the tundra rear view casing to see.

It’s very easy. All you do is pop the overhead console off and the connecter is right there.

These are from another member. The empty connector is circled in red. This assuming that you don’t have the auto dimming mirror. If you do, then you’ll unplug it and the Dongar connector goes in between the two connections.

You just pull down on the front of the overhead console. It’s held in place by 2 friction pins. You’ll tilt it down and then slide it forward for it to come away from the headliner.

Which Dongar adapter did you end up using? 10 pin type B?

If you want to connect to the empty power in the headliner, then it's a 5-Pin Type A adapter.

Thanks for the tip - love the clean look. Hopefully I'll never need this thing!

Word of advice for others: I had to pass the wire from behind the headliner down to the windshield, as opposed to up. I just couldn't get the USB past the liner and into the overhead cavity...there's a small lip there on the roof that was hanging things up.

Will the Garmin Mini 2 and 5 pin type A Dongar adapter setup record when parked and a collision happens or is that only available with the constant power cable?

Anyone add a rear facing cam to an existing OEM dashcam? On my 21 Plat, I had both a front and rear facing camera. The rear facing camera was connected to the front facing one. The setup came with an add a fuse connection so it was always on. I really don't want to remove the OEM front facing camera, but need a rear facing one also. TIA
