I have a new to me 2002 tundra with 3.4 and 5 speed 2wd no lift tires are 265/75/16 I doubt the rear end has been swapped out but this truck does 65mph at 2500rpm and 70 at 2900 rpm just checking if this is normal ive been searching but seems like most have the v8.

Interesting. I’m not familiar with the 3.4 and manual combination. I wonder if they put a shorter fifth gear or higher gear ratio in the rear end because of that smaller engine. Maybe someone else will have an answer for you.

I think ive read v6’s had 4.30 rears and taco 5 speeds might have either .83 or .75 OD.

3.4L came with either 4.1 or 4.3 gears depending on year/trans/etc.

5 sp trans has a shorter 5th than the auto iirc (higher rpm on freeway if given the same rear gears).

I missed out on grabbing a set of 4.3's for my truck from one at the junkyard.

Slight add- 265/70/16 is the biggest stock size I know of on first gen. You are rolling slightly taller than that.

For a V6 that doesn't sound like too high of RPM. Maybe @Tundra2 can tell us what his runs at, although it is auto.

The manual transmission does change things. What exactly, I'm not sure of.

My 3.4L, if memory serves will cruise at those speeds in the 2,000-2,200 ish. My memory might be off now that I'm dailying the corolla.

Edit: on flat ground. Pulling hills will be higher as always.

I would recommend checking the speedo against a GPS app or one of those signs that says what your speed is and pretends to take your picture. With the slight difference in tire size I bet the speedo is off for the OP.

265/70R16 for clarity going forward. I'm still not 100% sure what gears it came with as I've read differing reports.

It reads higher under acceleration. Reads lower under maintained RPMs. Is that not normal?

Also, valve covers leak so I may lose some eventually between oil changes. Been awhile since I did the oil change as I've been in the corolla.

    Must be a V6 thing ?
If I was cruising at 70 w/2600 rpm like your showing, my pressure would be normal at 1/2 way mark !

Finally another truck like mine! There's only a few of us manual shifters on here. I have a 2003 but with the same specs as you (3.4l V6, 2WD, 5-speed manual) and those rpm numbers are the same for me. I've always thought the rpms were a little high, but it does help given that the 3.4l can feel a little underpowered for our trucks.

Must be. There aren't a lot of us V6'rs in the first gen section. The few that have come since I've been here, have gone.

Not a whole lot of real life data to be yielded from four or five posts.

Agreed here, the V6 in these heavier trucks does feel slightly under powered. How does the manual treat you?

I've enjoyed the manual a lot, although I had a bit of a learning curve. I learned stick on an older Rav4, so I had to get used to shifting with the weight of the truck. You can really feel it roll back, even on slight hills. It almost makes it more fun to drive though, as you definitely have to get the rpms higher and drive a little more aggressively to get up to speed with smooth shifts.

My truck is more of a camping rig/the occasional large-object mover, so the V6 works for me. But I can see how it wouldn't always be the best option for some.

Glad to know there's another active V6 member on here!

I learned to drive a manual in Pops Nissan. It was Friday. They had gone to Florida for the week, and I was to report to work late the next Saturday. So I putted around the yard in his 4cyl, 5 speed nissan Frontier. Once I got comfortable in the yard, I allowed myself to graduate to my back country roads. Once comfortable there, I went to town. I stopped on a hill waiting for a Stop light to turn green. I stalled it, and I was nervous. So I calmed down, and started it back up, and squalled tires the rest of the way up the hill.

    Good times.

Sounds like the camping rig works well for you. I'm kinda jelly of the manual, but not jelly enough to swap mine over. :D

The others here will attest to this as well. I've been here, and active for quite some time now. I post everyday, and have been very vocal about being the only active V6 in a forum filled with V8s. I'm glad to see that's changed now!

You can find more on the engine work, and other truck related things on my build thread.

Hello all, new member here. Yup a fellow first gen 3.4 v6 owner here as well. I’ve just recently done a job that requires bringing heavy equipment 4 hours away for a stair job out of town in the tundra. It already has a camper top on as well. After 70 miles per hour it was just running at high rpm’s especially on cruise control. I was afraid I might need to get a transmission rebuild which I’m actually really considering knowing that the A340E transmission before 2003 wasn’t up to par for the new weight of the truck. I’ve been told there are a lot of aftermarket fixes for these. But yeah I’m in the same boat. Definitely feels underpowered under a load for sure, especially at highway speeds.

The A340 is stouter than some on here give it credit for. Some had planetary gear issues in the early years. Mine is a 1999 build, can’t get much earlier. I’ve towed heavy, like 7000+ pounds numerous times with mine and haven’t had issues. Still on the original everything and still running smooth at 268k miles. Don’t tow in OD.

I wasn’t in OD. Which I was confused about…. It just simply may be from the previous owner hauling or something before I bought it. I’ve noticed it jerks between 2nd and 3rd gear sometimes even after making sure the fluid levels were at the right level. May be time to get it rebuilt. Anyone know what to get changed out? I know the gears needed to be changed at some point. 198,000 miles as of right now. The previous owner told me it was rebuilt but I’ve already done a ton of work on it that she said was previously done and either she was lieing or she had back yard hacks doing the work. Valve covers were missing bolts and some were only hand tight. I recently bought a 2002 Toyota 4 runner as well and it just feels way smoother.

There is an issue with the OD button shorting out on these trucks, where the wire passes into the column via the shift lever.

I'd be investigating that if you think it's stuck in OD. Link: https://www.tundras.com/threads/o-d-microswitch.126827/#post-3239233

If that happens to be your issue. It may be worth checking in your case to see if that's the problem.
