Guys I stopped by my local dealer as I saw a new 2024 on the lot right out front. It was a limited crew max iforce max limited TRD off-road with do package; upgraded ridge grappler tires. Sharp looking truck. Sticker 75k; add on total over 78k. Are people really paying this?

Not me. Let someone else take the hit on depreciation. A gently used, well maintained ~3 year old truck is the way to go if you ask me.

For that price, I would get a 2023 closeout Denali 3500 Diesel.

I had a rental F150 XLT for a while and figured it was like mid 40k. Then I looked it up on the build and price tool and the base XLT is mid 40s but this one had 20-25k in options so was really a 70k XLT (aka SR5) and was blown away. People (were) paying these prices, I think it’s slowed down alot.

Pretty sure I’ve bought my last ever half ton.

The segment is nuts. Trucks are supposed to be tools. But all the YouTubers and auto journalists spend just as much time judging seat comfort, interior looks, and screen size as they spend discussing what the thing is actually capable of. Manufacturers are twisting themselves in knots trying to find the next solution in search of a problem. It’s all so very stupid. Amusing to watch from a distance, though, I guess.

Only if you were towing heavy! :D

I had a 1 ton diesel prior to this truck. As a daily driver there is no comparison! I couldn't sell the diesel (now $4.09/gal here) fast enough after we sold our 5th wheel!

Guys in the agricultural business, mining, construction, and trades don’t buy domestic HD trucks because they love the Big 3 or ass pain and repair bills. They buy them because they’re the only tools on the market that do the jobs they have to do.

Yes, very dumb people are evidently still paying that much for 1/2 ton pickups.

Base price of a 2007 Limited CM 4x4 was $43000. Adjusted for inflation, that is $65000 in todays dollars. Here are all the prices - https://www.motortrend.com/features/2007-toyota-tundra-pricing-announced-268/

Starting price of a 2024 Limited CM 4x4 is $61265 after delivery. Here is the link from Toyota - https://www.toyota.com/configurator...bap_guid=8aa6afcb-6117-4325-aef3-616a3aba6678

Sounds like you had a dually. Fuel here isn't a big difference in price between 87 (I would run 91 octane in a turbo motor). So premium here is 4.40, 87 is 4.13, diesel is 4.43.

    You still buy gas? :rofl::thumbsup:

That is pretty good. I was looking at the upside app and they don't always have the best prices even after the discounts offered.

Pretty much all of the above. Held long enough guns and real estate will come out ahead in value, the other stuff not so much!

There’s quite a price Delta in $61K and the truck the OP is talking about at $78K.

I’m not saying inflation isn’t a thing, but an extra $17K in dealer bullshit is likely not giving $17K worth of extra capability. So only stupid people would buy that.

I won’t pay it. Hopefully this won’t be my last truck but I’m not paying 80k for a truck. A Toyota Corolla will do what I need.

I can somewhat help with this. I’ve bought four Tundras in the last 12 years. Each was bought brand new:

    2011 SR5 double cab 2wd: 27k
    2017 SR5 4wd Crewmax (with a spacer lift, wheels, and 33”tires): 38k
    2021 Platinum 4wd Crewmax: 50k
    2023 Platinum 4wd Crewmax: 67k*

*Dealer gave me what I paid for the 21 (50k) on the trade in. About 32k on the odometer. I believe they listed it at $51,500 when they sold it. I was surprised they had so little markup in it.
Another dealer offered me 43k (straight sale, not a trade in) for the 2017 with close to 70k on the odometer but I kept it.
Things were crazy for a while.

Trucks have had that equipment for 5 plus years. General inflation is the culprit. There is a lot of money in the country these days. Many more high earner or net worth folks who can buy whatever they want and bid it up for everyone else. Just read an article about airlines now sell 80 percent of first class seats while a decade ago the number was 15 percent. Supply vs demand is a problem.
