Anyones top hose seem to have pressure in it all time? I just bought a 16 sr5 with 75k on it. I just did a little check after work to see how things were going fluids wise over the last week and noticed my top hose pressure in it. The truck was sitting for 4 hours. I started the truck (cold) took the cap off and coolant shot everywhere. Is this a normal 5.7 thing. I have no misfires, no white smoke or anything. So I can’t see it being a head gasket. Help would be great.

From my experience, a firm hose pressure within 4 hours is normal on the 5.7 and not a sign of trouble like in diesel domestics.

Awesome! That’s a relief. After talking to my step dad he said his does the same thing. It is kinda weird how it keeps pressure that long though.

Exactly how it’s supposed to be. This is good. The cooling system builds pressure and holds it (no leaks or weak spots in the system).

Bought an 03 SR5 with the 4.7 last October. Had the same problem. Try cross referencing the radiator cap, on Google, against the proper cap for your truck. The DH's that worked on mine had put a cap on from a Nissan. Put the right cap on and started a cross country trip the next day. 6,000 miles with no problems. Hope that helps.

My worst fear was that the pressurized cooling system can also be an indication of a pressure leak into the cooling system from the combustion chamber ie; a leaky head gasket, a cracked head, or block. Have you done a leak down test on the cooling system?

That was kind of my fear as well. So I did a very cold check the next morning. My oil level is dead nuts. So if it was a head gasket and coolant was entering somehow I’d see it that way. Also the pressure was no longer there after sitting all night. Judging by what others are saying I’m thinking it’s normal at least at the moment. This was the first time I had the heat cranked this year.. so maybe I just had some air in it from everything going through the heater core again.

This is also an indication like you stated, but you will have cooling issues with this problem.

A good way to see if a head gasket is leaking is pressure testing. Another shade tree mechanic way is when the vehicle is cooled down, remove radiator cap and start vehicle. Then warm up vehicle normally. Then rev up engine to ~2000 rpm and see if bubbles start coming up to the radiator fill neck.
