Considering trading my Tundra in for a 2022 Ford F250.

Considering this build in particular (add to this the Lariat Value Package). I've spent a lot of time researching and shopping around - this 7.3l gas hauls ass. I drove the 7.3l gas, the 6.7l Powerstroke, and also the 6.6l Duramax. The Powerstroke was definitely the peppiest, but a little more than I need or may ever need.

In the future, I would like to get a 5th wheel and possibly a small boat to tow behind the 5th wheel. Neither will be huge - just a modest trailer and boat for my small family of 4.

This has always been my long term goal, but considering I have offers for my truck a full $10k over what I paid new, I figure this is a good way to put a huge dent in the cost of an HD truck.

There are no trucks that meet my requirements in my area or within 2-3 states of me, so I plan to order and should have the truck in hand by November. If the numbers all work out I would be letting the Tundra go this week..

Genuinely curious what the group here thinks about this.

Well...... You are not the only one as of late. There has been many that have done the same. Me being one of them. There is a thread for 3/4 ton truck that has been active lately and has a ton of good information. I will link the thread here in a few.....

I was lucky and had pretty good timing. I made the jump this past October. I still got premium price for my Tundra, but 2021 models were coming out and still a little available in the HD market. I got a pretty decent deal on mine. Depending on trim and options, I would expect to pay MSRP or maybe a couple grand less if you are lucky.....

If you are thinking of getting a 5th wheel get a 1 ton diesel. Doesn’t need to be a dually. You won’t regret it.

How much under MSRP are they willing to go? Sure you may be getting $10k more for your truck, but if you're paying $10k more for the new truck are you really gaining anything?

Also 2023 the Ford HD's are getting another overhaul, and it would likely be more than the cosmetic upgrade they got in 2020, so if you wait a year they'll be some bigger changes.

I'd be paying MSRP for the new truck, sans $1000 order incentive and $1000 dealer incentive. I'm alright at basic math. ;)

If I wait until 2023 it's doubtful my Tundra will be worth anything near what it is right now.

Yeah with the value you will be getting for the Tundra, it does somewhat put you in the same. Boat when domestics are discounting the HD trucks 12-15%.

In the grand scheme of things, if you are in a good position financially, life is short I say go for it!

If you can sell the truck and live without another truck for 6+ months you might come out on top pretty well. But if you sell now and buy now you likely aren't saving much money.

Really it just depends on your needs.

If I sell the Tundra now and place a build order, I will receive any incentive pricing that is available when the build is complete. Currently there is no mark up on these HD trucks like there currently is with Toyota vehicles.

Not *exactly* answering your question but here’s something to consider— if you decide to do the deal, see if the dealership will let you keep your Tundra until they can fulfill the order. When I traded the Ridgeline for the Tundra, they didn’t hesitate when I made that request, the dealer I was working with ultimately couldn’t fulfill the order (the truck they had allocated had some unspecified damage and the time to delivery went to TBD) anyway… over that time the Ridgeline appreciated by $2k!! Get the price locked in now and ride out the wait in style.:hattip:

Paying anywhere close to MSRP is them being marked up. Usually they get discounted 10-15% on the spot - do some haggling and it's quite a bit more. Note this is dealers cranking up the prices, not Ford, so yes you'll get any Ford discounts but you're missing out on the normally huge dealer discounts.

If you feel your current trade value makes up for that extra 15% then the finances make sense, if not then waiting for the chip shortage to pass will be better financially.

But hey, right now almost nothing makes sense with money so who knows if we'll see the days of huge dealer discounts again

I was looking at HD trucks in March 2020 when I purchased this Tundra, at that time there were some dealer incentives but in order to get them you had to use the dealer financing. That is, you could either get a cash discount and pay a higher interest rate, or you could pay cash or arrange your own financing but you would not qualify for the discounted price. At that time the cost of a similar truck to what I'm looking at now was within $3000.

The dealer and manufacturer incentives are typically smoke and mirrors and come with caveats. When you figure out the actual cost over the course of a loan, or the cash cost, you are basically paying MSRP either way.

Serious thought when reading the OP's plan... I've never towed tandem, but see the big rigs doing it and it seems the two tails are always wagging the dog to some degree. Would it still be a concern with camper and boat? And if so, wouldn't a 1ton dually be preferable, both for weight of tow vehicle and extra 2 tires of grip in the rear to help maintain control of "normal" tandem trailer movement from road/wind conditions? Or is it basically a non-issue since the boat will be the lightest of the 3 and won't catch near the wind a full sided trailer does?

Do some research… had a Ford HD Diesel that got the death wobbles….it’s no joke… the truck legit feels like it going to explode… check the forums. Ford isn’t doing anything about any of the affected years except recommending a steering stabilizer. I’d stay away and look at Cummins or Duramax.

It's fine - two bumper pulls would be a problem. A 5th wheel or gooseneck with a bumper pull will be fine. The 5th wheel is effectively an extension of the tow vehicle in this case, and is not susceptible to the same type of side sway as a bumper pull trailer. This is specifically why I'm looking into this type of setup.

@ColoradoTJ - can you fact check me on this please?

Sounds good to me. Only thing that gets sporty with GN/5th wheels is if and when the rear axle slides or tires break traction....it can get sporty.

Ford is in a class action lawsuit over this. I have one friend with a 2011 F-250 that has maintained it and has never experienced DW. Another one of my friends has a 2015 F-350 that had his complete steering and suspension links replaced due to DW at 20K miles. Yet again I have a buddy on TW that has a 2016 F-250 that has DW and can't find parts right now and is dealing with it.

Ram HD has death wobble issues as well. I've owned two and both had it at relatively low mileage due to the track bar bushings going bad. IFS trucks can get DW, but not as common.

Yep former death wobble owner here. And Ford's brake calipers are junk. I've replaced more calipers on 2 ford trucks than all vehicles I've driven in 30 years

Damn! I was just in Torrey over the weekend and traveled that exact stretch of highway. We had an unexpected, brief, but very intense rain storm and some minor flash floods. Really unpredictable area but very underrated and unknown.

I’m upgrading to an HD F-250. I flipped my 2019 DC earlier this year for a 2021, but I recently have a need to tow and the Tundra isn’t cut out for it. The money I made selling the Tundras made up for the price premium of the F-250 so it’s basically a wash. The only reason was the premium I’m getting for the Tundra. The F-250 payload is 2.5x my Tundra and I wasn’t going to push my weight ratings with the Tundra.

I have several people at work that pull doubles (5th wheel>bumper pull small "whatever") and our offroad group does at times.

Watch for the lengths and you should be fine. Highway Patrol will give you one foot as good faith. So if state law is 65'...you will be ok at 66'.

This is 51' total. (truck 20', 3' gap, 28' trailer deck.)

    IMG_3442 2.jpg

So if I wanted to put a bumper pull trailer behind this set up I could do a 14' total length trailer (like for a SxS). Colorado has a 65' or 75' depending on hitch setup. This configuration would be limited to 65'.

Trust me, the Colorado Highway Patrol does check. One of my co-workers has a 2019 Ram, 39'4' 5th wheel, 22' boat. He was pulled over, ticketed and had to leave the boat on the side of the road. He waited until his daughter could come out with his other truck and pull the boat home. That sucked.

The 5th wheel will be key on how well the set up works. In the setup with the 28', a boat wouldn't work. I would need to shrink the camper down to around 24-25' for a 19-20' boat. The differences in LB or SB bed configurations matters as well. Pulling something like that, long box all day long.

This is really good info. Seems like it is 65' in Utah as well. I imaging it's not easy getting through the Chik-Fil-A drive-through like this..
