My rear end is toast. I have a 2005 double cab 2WD. I found a local double cab 4wd rear axle assembly. Would that work? My mechanic knows how to make things work but I don’t want to get it if it won’t work. Please let me know if you guys have any advice. Thank you!

The whole rear end assembly is toast or just the 3rd member (center section)?

From what he told me it’s the actual housing that’s bad.

Ok, the axle off the 4wd should bolt right up if the yoke and companion flange look the same. Does the donor assembly come complete with center section? Pictures of the used assembly would help.

Sadly enough I don’t have pictures. It’s an online price I found one state over. $500 compared to $850 for a complete assembly. I’ll see if the guy will take pictures for me.

The whole housing. I guess it will always leak because the spot where the wheel bearing is has play and will always leak.

I don't know about the compatability between the two axles, but something doesn't add up in what your mechanic is telling you. The bearing housing that the bearing mounts into isn't even part of the axle housing. It's secured by 4 bolts to the end of the axle housing.
If there was play in that -- which I don't see how there could be -- you'd replace just the bearing housing. #6 in this diagram. Link to part at Toyota of Cool Springs.

I presume your axle is leaking gear oil? If so, first make sure the vent isn't plugged. If it's not, then you need to replace the bearing and the seal. That will require a press and a special tool... plus some attention to detail about how it comes apart and is pressed back together.
