Coach Builder 1" shims and Bilstein 6112's

New member here, but not new to the Toyota Family...

Needed a better daily/work truck for a commuter and had to let my Superduty go (great truck by the way)

I've got a 16' Limited TRD Offroad Crew Max. I've done a few mods to the truck but keep itching to do more. Debadged and Dechromed thanks to Sparks Parts. Added American Racing ATX AX201's (Wanted a factory-ish offset) and KO2's (275/70/16's) a while back.

I didnt want to go the spacer route so went pretty mild with Coachbuilder 1" spacers for the front. I am looking for a little smoother ride and want to level the truck so have been eyeballing 6112's. I am only looking for 2 inches of lift to level the front.

Question is, should I run the 6112's on a minimal setting in combination with the Coachbuilder shims or should I ditch them altogether and go with the 1.9" setting?

I want to set it and forget it so coilovers are not really my jam. I ran OME in my old 4Runner and loved the kit but from what I have read they ride a little rough in the Tundra's and give almost 3"s of lift which is a little more than what I am looking for.

If your looking for 2” I would just set at 1.9” and forget it. You can do shims but the only reason you would do that is to not preload you’re 6112 springs too much because of the stiff ride. Since you are essentially setting the 6112 at “middle” you won’t really get the stiff ride from preload like you would at 2.5”. I’m running 6112 at 1.9 and 1” of lift with shims for 2.9”. The 1.9 setting rides just fine so no real reason to fiddle fart with shims and subsequently bump stop extensions, which you will need of you run shims.

 

Now theoretically you get a smoother ride the less you preload the 6112 springs but I think you will see a dramatic improvement in ride from the 1.9 setting. I don’t think you’ll be able to tell much difference between the 1.3” setting. But if you did go with the 1.3 setting you would either run a half inch more lift with shims for 1.8” or one inch of shim lift for 2.3”. Remember that a one inch shim will give you two inches of lift. A half inch shim will give you 1” of lift and a 1/4” shim will give you .5” of extra lift.

 

6112 is set it and forget it. To re adjust you would have to completely un-install from truck which would be asinine. There is no easy adjustment on 6112 so it’s essentially a one time jobber unless you have a lot of time and money to waste.

 

I'm running 6112/ front drive 1.9, passenger 1.3.... rear 5160. Truck is leveled. Went with a lil preload on driver to compensate for extra weight on drivers side of truck.

 

Ive read setting the 6112s driver and passenger side differently is not recommended so I set my 6112s to 1.9” and installed 2 shims in driver side and 1 shim on passenger. Added a Toytec shackle in rear to maintain a slight 1” rake which I’m glad I did because I hauled about 600 lbs of landscape stone yesterday!

 

Ditto. Different preload on each side not recommended.
