I bought a dbl cab sr5 with the 4.6 used a little over a year ago. 70k now.

This summer I had a complete failure to start. Doing some diagnosis on here, I figured it was the fuel pump or the fuel pump module. Long story short but ended up replacing both. There is a chance that the guy doing it didn't have a clue was he was doing, but more on that later.

Since the new pump and module, I have consistently gotten check engine codes p0441 and p0455. Take truck back into shop. Mechanic tells me its evap pump and canister. We replace both.

A week later and now the check engine light is back on - p0456.

Truck drives "fine" but I've noticed since the fuel pump and module was replaced, the instant mpg mileage on the dash is pegged at 17.8. Never changes. I think the mechanic wired the pump funny.

Is this guy clueless or am I the clueless one to allow him to continue troubleshooting? The continued electrical / sensor issues are making me weary even though it seemed to be a good used deal and obviously bought the truck for its reputation as reliable.

I dont have the answer, can a mechanic chime in:

I always assumed the diagnostic fee was for correct diagnostic.

We have this issue on my tdi vw right now. No heat and CEL.

They swapped the heater core, still no heat found out egr was bad/ blocked, so that gets replaced too. Now all of this is under factory warranty, but I do wonder how that would be priced out if not.

They also did a flush on the dirty egr cooling circuit which blocked the new core, so, they need to replace that again as well.

If it's a MKIV, just swap out that EGR pipe and bypass the cooler. Then no more issues with the cooler or the EGR plugging up with soot (I've put over 450k & 300k miles on a couple of MKIVs)

Agreed, it's a b7 facelift car. So in just going to let the dealership fumble through it under the diesel gate warranty.

Evaporative systems can be the worst at tracking down issues. If the codes came only after the pump was done, I would suspect a connection left loose or broken hose. P0456 is the worst of them IMO. Very small leak in the system. Can be anything from a crack in the fuel cap seal to a pinched O-ring. System needs to be sealed off and smoke tested to find such, but Ive seen pressure seal a small leak, and vacuum create one. May try a different shop.
As far as wiring the pump funny, it should be a direct plug in. Not sure why your number is stuck, but I would reset it and see if it changes.

Is the fuel efficiency reset just a trip reset?

Thanks for the welcome. Lower Bama sounds a little bit better than Cali but I've got to throw a go Bearcats your way this week!

Thanks for linking to that thread, I didn't know it existed!

No, reset the fuel economy stats.
Tank avg. will reset when you refill
Trip avg. will reset every ignition cycle
Total avg. can be reset with center dot button on steering wheel.
Also a section in the radio under eco you can reset.

Thanks for the input and suggestions, glad I'm not crazy.

I have never been one to question buying used and again bought this on the reputation of reliability but have no desire to chase squirrel evap and electrical issues while I own the truck.

    Took it back.

3x smoke test lead to a new gas cap. Then proved by 3x smoke test.

Its been back for 2 weeks and guess what showed up again...the ol check engine light and P0456.

    Not sure what's next.
