I know the Falkens are very popular all terrains. I'm trying to find an all terrain for our Rav4 that's not extremely aggressive. There are only a few options in 225/65/17 and this is one of them. I'm just really turned off by this tire being made in China.

The other options I would consider are the Yokohama Geolander and the Toyo Open Country. The Toyo must be new as there are no reviews on there yet.

When I called discount tire the guy I spoke to actually recommended the Falken and it has the best treadwear numbers of the 3.

Would you buy a Chinese made tire?

Wildpeaks are fine and very popular tires. Your other two brands listed are companies in Japan btw. And there are reviews of all the brands you listed online.

Honestly for a Rav4 you may want to consider a Mud and Snow rated all season tire. Those will wear and ride better, probably cost less too. What is the reason for wanting all terrain tires for the Rav4?

Now I always run AT tires, but I also always own a 4wd of some kind. As much as I love them, there are trade offs- they do not ride as well, get worse MPG and often do not have as high as mileage ratings compared to all season tires. I am not sure a Rav4 will see the type of conditions to actually benefit from an AT tires.

Actually the Toyo I listed is made in the USA and the Yoko is made in Thailand. I'm not speaking about the headquarters. Most of the Wildpeak's are made in Thailand but this particular size is made in China.

We occasionally take the Rav4 on forest service roads that get rocky. I want something that's less likely to puncture than an all season tire. Also, I've had horrible luck with the last 2 set of Michelin tires we've run on this vehicle. The first set was a 60K mile tire that only lasted ~35K. I filed a warranty claim with Michelin which paid for a percentage of the next Michelin tires. Now these are starting to dry rot after only ~35K miles and they are rated for twice that mileage. I'm not buying another set of Michelin tires.

I've seeing a lot of people putting mild all terrain tires on RAV4's, Suburu's and other similar vehicles.

I would be open to a mud rated all-season if you have suggestions.

I am willing to pay much more to buy American made products and to support veterans. Knowing it’s Chinese made and that there’s alternatives, we would never buy those faulkens

I put Cooper AT3s on my AWD Element and they have been pretty amazing really so far!
I was worried that they would be loud and ride rough but neither has been the case at all.

I am on rough and unimproved construction sites a lot and so far they seem pretty tough too.

Most people who notice them are surprised that I run this aggressive a tire on the Element and I like that too!

    Another to look at maybe?

Unfortunately they don't make that tire in the size I need, 225/65/17. Discount Tire was showing it as an option on their website but when I called last week the employee told me it was incorrect.

Sorry about that but now that you mention it I remember being amazed that they offered a size for the Element too?!
    Great tires though.

My Toyo at2s are stamped "made in usa" on the sidewall and it was one of the deciding factors for me when choosing the tire. I think it's a personal choice and since you looked for it, I'd say it matters to you too. I owned a set of P rated at2s a while back and they were silent, lightweight and not too aggressive. I think they'd be great on your Rav4, not sure where the AT3 sit on the spectrum.

There are a few countries I go out of my way not to support and China tops that list. I am looking at Falkens for my next set of tires. Thailand is fine, China isn't' happening. I'll have to be careful of the size I get and where they're made.

I just got a set of chinese falkens and not impressed compared to my Thailand falkens. I had thought they were all Thailand made or I would have passed on buying them.

I'll be going back to Michelin Tires after my Cooper XLT wear out...which should be rather quick from what I'm experiencing.

Same here. It’s very difficult, but I refuse to buy ANYTHING made in China if I can help it. The entire world needs to work together to destroy that country economically for unleashing a biological weapon.

Beyond the political reasoning or how you may feel, its common knowledge that products made in China are made very very cheaply. This can benefit both the consumer and manufacturer in some instances but these tires are spinning at around 1000rpm and flying down the road at 70mph under your family.

Would changing the tire size slightly open up more options?

I thought about this. If I went up to 235's it would give me 3 more options that I would consider. I'd have to take a look and see if they would rub.

That's surprising. I hear a lot of praise for Cooper. I've had horrible luck with Michelin. I could do another warranty claim on my current set if I wanted to but I'm not interested. Fool me once... When I did the warranty claim last time the tire salesman said they have been doing a LOT of Michelin claims.

Oh make no mistake, the Coopers are bad ass tires and would recommend them for a non-diesel application and minimal towing.

These tires are kick ass in the snow and ice. I just look for other qualities in a tow rig tire.

my chinese Falkens are 285/70/17s with a birthdate of Jan 2020. I assume that they are moving more sizes to their chinese factories.

I had Toyo AT2 before and I liked them. I have the Toyo RT now but I don't think available in the size you looking for. I also have Cooper AT3 XLT (made in USA) on other truck for more than year now, I love them, has been good for us. I think they have Cooper AT3 4S in 235/65/17. The main difference between the two cooper at3 is that the XLT has a more aggressive looking sidewall.

I run Yoko AT-S on my 4wd Element
They've been good to me in rain or snow, but as far as snow goes it's been more of icy mountain roads and the occasional 1ft of fresh powder at the ski resorts. Can't vouch for driving in worse than that or at highway speeds in snow.

Cute arent they? Like little versions of my tires.
    20190212_152307.jpg

I don't know if the Falkens on my GTI are made in China, they perform very well but wear very fast. I'll be lucky to get 2 years out of them. Completely different tire than the AT but throwing that out there.

Thats mainly why my cars only roll on 4 Apple Macbook Pros as they are sure made in China but are not too cheaply made at the same time!

Not everything made in China is crap despite some common political reasoning or preference but it sure is in vogue to say that they are.

    Powerful argument!

I am sure not saying that there is not a huge preponderance of pure shit made in China.

I am just saying that if they need to they can truly compete on any level.

Do we have any knowledge first hand about the Falken made there or just the Stereotype?

I just checked my Falken Wildpeak AT3W size 275/60R20 (p rated) and they're made in Thailand. I've had them on since May and no issues with them. I got them from Amazon.
