Admittedly early here but if the news that Toyota will be replacing all engines with a FULL engine block as a remedy to 24TA07 recall. What should we be thinking about BEFORE we make the decision to take our Tundras to the dealer? I’ll “prime the pump” to get a checklist started, in no particular order?

    - Confirm with dealer they are ready to start the day I drop my truck off?
    - Ask dealer how many replacements they’ve done to date? (I don’t want to be first)
    - Ask dealer how many of the mechanics working on my truck have done a 24TA07 replacement?
    - Clarify new engine warranty details if needed?
    - Estimated completion date?
    - Loaner car details? What is it?
    - ?

Good news for us hybrid owners, if our engine dies we can make it an extra mile before the truck is done for! One less mile for the tow fee

You wait as long as possible so dealer mechanics can practice on other trucks

I would want guaranteed long term coverage on all the subsequent problems caused by this replacement. Freon leaks, coolant leaks, oil leaks, electrical sensor and wiring/connector issues. Rattles, vibrations and noises not there before.

I would want to confirm... If you have a Platinum warranty and the engine is replaced, does the warranty still cover (parts) on the new engine for the life of the warranty?

My plan is to drive the truck as is as long as possible until it either breaks down or I decide to get to rid of it and then I'll trade it in and let Toyota do the recall before they sell it themselves. I just don't foresee myself being happy after the recall is performed knowing it has been gone through and wondering if everything was done correctly, new rattles, etc.

Wait so are they preemptively replacing engines on recalled trucks or are they replacing them as they blow up?

Or, wait a couple of months and they will figure it out with experience.
If you trust your dealer so little that you have to give them an SAT test before you leave your truck, I would change brands.
I always assumed Ford sold the most trucks and would have service down just as a way of life. I was wrong. I changed brands.
Regardless of what people say about the safety issue there were many ways for Toyota slow roll this and spread the financial impact. They're being pretty straight forward although it still sucks if you're an owner. I've been through so many engine outs, cab offs and very complex services it doesn't bother me.
I'm just outside the range by a couple of months, I wouldn't 'be concerned about getting a new engine. In fact, I'd be happy to have them do it.

Yeah, how the warranty details play out from Toyota will be interesting. I assume Toyota will NOT reset to zero bumper to bumper warranty but instead take the odometer number at time of replacement and add that to new miles driven on the new engine to derive warranty coverage for the rest of the truck? We’ll see. IMHO, an important factor and timing of replacement for me would be before my 36k/36 mo. expires in the event their replacement job resulted in something else breaking in which case I’m still covered.

What are people doing about oil changes going forward? Knowing you are getting a new engine are you still going to change your oil every 5-10k miles?

Yes. Why would I treat the truck I want to keep like a beater rental car? Just because we are getting new engines doesn't mean go ahead and do everything you can to make it blow up.
