Checking the oil level is an exercise in futility

I changed my oil yesterday. Go to check the level on the dipstick and this appears to be one of those designs where it is next to impossible to get an accurate oil read. The oil comes out smeared all over the dipstick and you can’t tell what the level is. Rant off.

Is everybody having this issue or am I a dumbass?

    This is a 2023 gen 3.

Yes it's a pita. I gave up doing the old school method(pull, wipe, insert, pull, look) and instead just let it sit for 15 min then pulled and looked.

Look closely at both sides. One side will typically be smeared to the point you can not get a reading off it, while the other typically has a defined upper limit where the oil stops and you can take your reading. At least this has been my experience. The 0w-20 doesn't make it any easier to read, that is for sure.

Past f150 I had to use a 3 step just to get up high enough to reach it. At least we can grab it without any assistance But just let it sit for alittle and the reading gets alittle better.

I used a piece of steel wool (and even emery cloth) to rough up the one side of the lower few inches of the dip stick.
This allowed the oil to have a little more "grip" when it was being pulled out.

Did this by putting the dipstick on the flat edge of a vice and went back and forth putting horizontal marks on the dipstick.
Nothing crazy deep but it seemed to work better.

Now after a little use the oil will get easier to read as it darkens up.

Just changed my oil for the first time. It is a pain in the butt. I measured what came out and it exactly filled up two gallon milk jugs.

Only way I found to measure reliably is to let it sit overnight or for several hours and look on dipstick on first pull out. If you wipe and go in and out then it smears.

Interesting, did you fill it up with 8 quarts then or just do the 7.7?

Tried my best to estimate 7.7 quarts. But honestly, from here out I'm just dumping in 8 quarts. That extra 0.3 quarts is equal to 1.2 Cups. I'm fine with that.
