My original catalytic converters were stolen. (2017, 5.7) I had two converters on each side. The exhaust shop I'm going to use says I only need one heavy duty converter on either side. Of course this will save some money, but will it cause any future issues?
I had one shop that wanted to charge me $6400. to put all original OEM parts. Ouch!

    THANKS FOR THE ADD

It’s my understanding that anything besides OEM parts may throw CEL codes down the road.

This is generally true, at least with the 1st gens.

What others have noted is, if the cat you choose is CARB compliant cats, you greatly diminish any risk of popping cat inefficiency codes later (P0420 / P0430).

It's very possible the 1st gens are more sensitive on cats though. We've had luck with Walker, Magnaflow, and Summit Racing's house brand.

Whether or not you can get away with dropping from two cats per side to one cat per side is beyond me. If the shop can guarantee you won't throw codes with that setup, and they'll put it in writing, I guess "go for it?"

In theory, as long as your upstream sensor (O2 - air/fuel ratio sensor) remains intact and the wiring is un-cut, and the downstream is reporting back a good upstream/downstream filtration ratio, you should be fine. Upstream helps ECU factor out if it's burning efficiently, not lean/rich, and the downstream helps determine if the cat is working.

    PS - CAT THIEVES SUCK

I've had magnaflow cats on my 2018 SR5 for almost 2 years now, it threw the 0420 code a couple times but I just kept clearing it and after a couple weeks it stopped popping up. I think they need to build up a lil crud before the truck gets a proper reading

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
Have the new ones welded on for extra security - most will move onto an easier target. Luck.

I have been told this by a shop as well. They claimed to never have had an issue.

It makes sense, there isn't a sensor after the 2nd cat on either side. Its like the 2nd cat is there as a "back-up" but nothing to Guage its performance or effectiveness.

I did previously go after market bolt in with the driver's side upstream cat with no issue.

Yeah, the 2nd set of cats can be removed with no CELs or issues. I removed my complete OEM cats to install the catted midpipes @reywcms linked. Like he said, no issues with codes with those. I should probably sell my OEM ones, don’t think I’ll need them again and someone local could probably use them and be worth a few bucks.

Thanks everyone. Also considering a booby trap consisting of pepper spray.

I know its to late but maybe to help in the future.

RCI sells Cat Guards that attach to the transmission skid plates. I have RCI engine skid and transmission skid, they included the cat guards for free, might of been a promo. I bought my truck used and noticed some scratching on the body where the cats are located, like a saw blade hit it lol.
