I have a 2018 silver double cab ltd (just acquired), and want to put a cap on it. I suspect that any used cap that was manufactured for the 6.5' bed for Tundra model years 2014 - 2021 will work, but that is my assumption and I have little upon which to validate. Are they year specific or "Gen" specific? Also, any recommendations to the brands, models, "nice to haves", "don't get", used vs. new, etc., are welcome.

This post will probably end up getting moved because there's a subsection for caps but you're correct in your assumption any cap with the correct bed length 14-21 will fit. I bought my truck new in 19 and started looking for used caps It's really a needle in a haystack to find one in the correct color and length you might get lucky but I wasn't able to find one so ended up ordering a Leer 100xr with the carpet ceiling and removable front window, You definitely want that so that you're able to wash your window if needed. After purchase I installed the electric remote lock which you can get on Amazon but you have to have the electronic tailgate lock installed first. It's nice to be able to lock everything up with one button.

i have an ARE MX on my 2017 DC and love it. second ARE MX I've owned, the first being the one bought for my 2001 tacoma.

i ended up purchasing both new - toppers are hard to find in my area. maybe not so much where you're located.

if you go with new, i'd highly recommend adding the "Windoors" ... they make getting random shtuff out of the truck bed heaps easier:

the ability to run crossbars on the top is also nice to have.

i added a tailgate pop & lock a few months after i had the topper installed. really straightforward and super convienient.

    good luck with your search!

I agree totally with the flip up side windows. I would not go without them. I use them almost daily to reach stuff. Also getting a pop out rear window to match the full opening tundra window makes sense.

I went with Leer, but I have some complaints. The latches on the side windows are heavily rusted already and water gets in the bed during every rain. Bought mine in late 2019 new and its garage kept.

I don't have pop out windows but my use for my cap is probably different than most, I got it to keep my dogs in the bag so I keep my windows slid open for the dogs to stick their head out and get air. I'm not sure if the pop out windows also slide open or if they slide open as much. Just something else to think about.

On my third Leer which I have never had problems with. Windoor on the passenger side(so you can access from curb if needed) and a full sliding window with heavy duty pet screening on the driver side for the dogs Front window is just a slider for access from cab. Carpeted topper interior is nice for noise. Two rows of LEDs on the interior ceiling along with some mounting hooks for cargo netting. Handle locks on either side of door is the simplest and most durable set up. Don't care about electronic locks on topper or tailgate. If you find a used one, replace the weatherstripping on door, windows and along bottom edge.

You obviously need to replace all of the weatherstripping. Door, windows and bottom edge. And make sure it is the correct kind. Having a topper that is not weatherproof would be useless to me.
