Hey guys, got my catalytic converter stolen off the truck this past Monday. Been dealing with insurance and Toyota and parts are of course, backordered so I couldn't wait as I need my truck for work.
Went to a trusted local muffler, had them put on 4 Magnaflow catalytic converters and all the oxygen sensor. They tried clearing the code but this is still on the dash and the truck doesn't run normal. I won't say limp mode but not full power.
Note, these error showed up after the thieves took my cats already
Anyone know what's going on before I take it to Toyota?

Did they cut your O2 sensors too?

I like simple first. Did you disconnect the battery and let it sit disconnected for 30 minutes (to drain every last bit of electrical charge from all systems)?

How far/long have you driven it with the new Cat installed and wired up?

Hmm...I need to look more into that but I wonder how getting my cats stolen caused this. Scheduling appointment to get diagnose and a pain too lol

Shouldn't, pumps are in the engine bay (front pass fender well).

Did not and wish it was that easy, but I went outside, checked and re-tighten the gas cap, same issue. Have a diagnosis appointment with local dealership tomorrow :(

Well, sheeit. I was really hoping for the cheapest solutions (as always). Let us know what eventually kills the code, before my curiosity kills me.

Supposedly the cats that was put on isn't working and causing all these issues, according to the dealership...

I was understanding that most of the time only OEM cats will make the codes go away.

I can see that in regards to limp mode but for Trailer Brake Error or Pre-Collision System malfunction, kinda confuses me?

If you have faults in one module, other modules error out because they all rely on each other for proper communication and feedback.

I'd be interested to see how it pans out with OE cats.

Wait, it’s not 100% confirmed. Dealership recommends replacing with OEM full exhaust and then retest. Sigh…I’m screwed either way

I’m back at the shop and they don’t believe it’s their cats and said dealership will try to go OEM to get paid…

The only way I could believe that it's the cats is if the fault itself will clear and again set during secondary air activation. That would lead me to believe the pump, or function itself, has some sort of pressure reading that would read low with a cat offering less airflow resistance (OE cats having a higher flow through resistance). Unlikely IMO.

Well, one of the code was reading bad o2 sensor. Shop is ordering a new one and should have that replaced tomorrow and go from there.

So now your getting more codes than the 2 you stated earlier in the thread?

Ha, wonder if the codes were stored because Toyota was working on the truck. Techs can sometimes get into bad habits of not clearing codes after they tinker with a car.

Please post what you find out with the codes, they got my two CATs from my 2015 Tundra last night. A local repair shop quoted $4153 with OEM parts. I was going to check on aftermarket parts but I'd like to see how it works out for you. Thanks in advance.

For those of you that had your cat stolen at home have you tried filing a claim under your home owners insurance?

Basically, if you go aftermarket, find a reputable shop and then on top of that, have it in writing that they will have things working and not worse. I'm cutting my losses and headache and will be trading in the truck pretty soon as I need a vehicle.

I thought I had a reputable shop but they are basically refusing to help or admitting fault. Truck ran normal before, just loud, but after they put their converters and sensor on, it's now in limp mode, not sure what else they need then that and since they won't assist, I will just talk to my credit card company about this.

Thanks I appreciate the information. I'm just going to let the insurance take care of it and make sure they put OEM parts on. Take care.

Sometimes, muffler shop is just that, a muffler shop, I couldn't clear CEL with aftermarket cats after headers, only way CEL would stay off is by fabbing up custom mid pipes with OEM cats, and technically you can run just the front 2 cats, as secondary O2 is slotted between the 2 cats, also, did they put on the right sensors? did the thieves cut off other stuff?

Get yourself a simple OBD2 reader, and post the codes, you may save yourself thousands of dollars that way instead of trading in a car at a loss.

FYI....would think an aftermarket CAT would work, maybe not as robust as an OEM CAT but should work initially. I suspect the problem was the O2 sensors - always install Toyota or Denso O2 sensors.

I think on the 18+ they changed something, there's few of us with headers just couldn't get rid of CEL with aftermarket cats with various old tricks (various foulers, even o2 simulators), only way to clear O2 codes was re-installing the factory cats.
