Just got around to reading this - this is such a clearly biased post lmao. The first half is all about how the $ amount isn't correct for USA and is likely lower. Then the second half goes on to talk about how the $ amount is likely higher for Denmark. Both of these statements are made with little to no supporting documentation. In fact, the only evidence/research provided is an anecdotal "here's the price at one McDonald's I looked at - look how much lower it is than the average they give for the area... $0.12!". They then act like this $0.12 difference invalidates the averages being taken for everywhere else. What an absolutely massive leap. The conclusion was reached well before the data was actually considered here.

I will concede the point that Denmark does pay more in taxes, but even that is a pretty weak concession because their taxes include healthcare. If we combine insurance + US taxes, I don't think we're too far off from that ~40% number.

Gonna edit out my opinion since it's irrelevant to the greater discussion. Just mentioning the fact that a portion of all EU taxes does go towards healthcare and social services that we don't provide in the US. Right, wrong, or the other it is entirely unrelated aside from being a different use case for their taxes than the US's and worth considering when saying EU has 'high taxes'.

Again, not something I want to get banned for sharing my thoughts on. Just saying that when we call out other countries for higher tax rates, the included medical care should be considered as well.

Just throwing it out there that europes health care costs are not 100% covered by the universal health care. I deal alot with my works sister company in Ireland and I have an Irish compliance agency auditor and they say that MOST of the costs are covered but they still pay some for higher end services like MRI or CAT scans. I believe he said his mother had to pay about 250 pounds for a CAT scan, nowhere near what the USA would get you for but its worth noting that its not 100% no questions asked free for anything you can imagine.

I would rather not pay for universal health care from age 20 to 50, save that money myself into an HSA or something, as is the case now, then use that from 50-death. Money now is better than the possibility of free services later, if you are alive lol

I doubt I can find it again but I saw a chart that compared taxation in the US and France. Yes, you pay more tax in France but, by the time you pay for healthcare, a nursing home and I can't remember what else out of pocket in the US, you're behind where you would be in France.

So it's impossible to get sick or injured between the ages of 20 and 50?

absolutely not, just far, far less likely to require a sustained monetary flow or a large chunk of cash. My deductible is 6 grand. yes it is alot, but I save money every check (which is also tax free and tax deductible) and get money put in by my employer for doing certain things. I capitalize on those opportunities. I can swing 6 grand for something catastrophic. I dont pay 1 penny for anything after 6 grand, not for an ingrown toenail, not for cancer, not for brain surgery. And that situation is extremely unlikely. Now, paying every check, say in europe, you are "wasting" that money if you dont use it in your younger years. That money could be used by you to some benefit like an HSA, investments, IRA, whatever.

This will be my last comment regarding healthcare (for real, I'm not responding to anymore on this): if you reframe it as akin to Social Security it makes a lot more sense. You pay into the system in your 20s-50s and take out from the system in your later life. Given the older age of this forum (buncha boomerz), I think we can all agree that Social Security is a good thing as it helps keep granny from slumming it on the streets when she's too old to flip burgers. I'm unsure why we like that, but have no issue with putting her on the street because she can't afford the extreme price of chemo for her cancer.

To get us back on topic, I still have yet to hear a good reason why McDonalds/Walmart paying their employees so little that they have to draw welfare (our tax dollars) to supplement themselves, all while these corpos make record profits that go to the shareholders, is a good thing. Some people earlier said that they don't want the government mandating a minimum wage hike on these corporations, but it doesn't seem these companies have any interest in not just continuing to exploit the system for their own gain (again, while indirectly at the taxpayer's expense). Regardless of whether a burger flipper should live a dignified life for working a 40 hour work week, why are we okay with (indirectly) paying these companies to not pay their employees?

Last thing I will say on the subject as well, is that barring an early death, social security, at least, even though I am not a fan of it, gives you money monthly no matter what from the time you start, the medical version of this would be a reward for the unhealthy and a punishment for the healthier since not everyone has the same medical needs, whereas everyone gets the same amount of money from social security.

Duuuude, the idea of a 30 hour work week is incredible. I'd pretty seriously consider a pay cut to be able to get full benefits on a sub-40 hour job.

My wife worked for a French company and pretty much all of her French coworkers took the entire month of August off every year... You can guess how much time off she got

But yeah, the cars suck for sure.

So move to France. If the stuff you want already exists in another part of the world, go there.

The individual freedoms, eroded as they currently are, do not exist anywhere else in the world. They also aren't easily recoverable if handed over to the guberment. When was the last time any guberment anywhere in the world willingly relinquished power?

You want guber healthcare, go where it's offered. Quit trying to force it on those of us that would rather have less overlord involvement in our day to day lives. If other countries do everything so much better, go apply your skills to their economy and live under their rules. What you want will cost myself and others their income and freedom. Pretty entitled and extremely selfish when you can take individual responsibility and pay that price yourself by relocating.

And before you say it, I may complain about being old, but that's because I'm in rough shape. I've made relatively few trips around the sun, and I'm far from being a boomer.

Every country that is allied with the US has a comparably tiny military budget because they are the US’s ally. Lots of people have lots of different opinions on that (which go beyond what we can discuss here, I’m sure), but when we’re talking about how a country chooses to spend its tax revenue, that needs to be a part of the conversation.

This is my thought as well. My favorite economist made a comment on our culture regarding how the subsidizing of poor decisions leads only to more poor decisions. There are no counter examples to this idea. Every time you make a path easier/cheaper/more convenient, every time you remove consequences from poor decisions, you get people going down that path; you get more poor decisions.

In the USA, we have the worst diets on Earth. What we choose to put into our bodies is based on flavor and convenience. We don’t care about nutritional value. We are completely addicted to sugar, which is in everything. Subsequently we are the fattest, sickest people on Earth and on the most meds (prescription and OTC).

How much worse should we expect it to get if we fully subsidize the decision to not take care of ourselves? The bulk of health care costs is not setting broken bones and stitching wounds from accidents; it’s long-term care and surgeries due to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc—major killers the risks of which are amplified by eating a total crap diet and being sedentary for the majority of your waking life.

This applies to minimum wages as well. A pay scale that incentivizes an able-bodied, able-minded adult to stay in a zero-skills environment is doing that person a severe disservice.

And I am totally fine with this military spending. I will give up the possibility of "better" universal healthcare so my country can have more 81mm mortars or a humvee with thicker armor and a better trained serviceman. I would pay type european taxes happily and with pride every 2 weeks if I knew it helped a veteran recover from his wounds, physical or mental, or to give him a car so he can get to work, or to help him buy a home so he can feel like a normal person. But I would and will bitch about even a penny in taxes that goes to social programs serving undeserving parasites that choose to leach off the system and not only that, but bad mouth america in the process. It makes me fume as I type this.

Have you seen where your current tax dollars go?

It’s absurd to discuss more/less/etc before demanding more transparency and better use of what the gubment currently takes.

I’m all for paying my taxes… if they were going to public services that we all enjoy. What percent of all taxes do you think actually goes to things people, generally speaking, universally use or benefit from? What percent is used for “other” category, to include all sorts of madness…

As far as healthcare I just wish that a person could buy just catastrophic care. About 15 years ago when I started and ran my own business I had to buy and pay for my own healthcare. The issue I had was I was younger and in decent health and never needed to go to the Dr. even for a checkup, but I had to pay for the whole package or none.

Back the original topic that I posted. The $21 an hour IT position is not really that technical in todays world. It is mostly changing passwords, setting up PC's and fixing MS applications. As a tech II I deal with more of the backend stuff like servers, SCCM, GPO's and the law enforcement applications. The Tech I position is 100% paid good health care, matching state retirement, and paid time off. You do not get those things at $20 fast food places.

If the position is not that challenging, can you outsource it to India? I bet you can get two people there for $21 an hour.
