    Hello there,

Having trans issues with my 2007 Tundra Crew Max 4wd.

I've got the rumble strip vibration under load ~60km/h, occasionally when cold the trans won't want to shift out of 2nd gear and seems to limit revs around 2000rpm and to top it off the CEL, VSC, 4LO lights came on the other day. I forget what the acual code number was but it read "shift solenoid performance or stuck off".

Recently had the truck in for minor repairs. The trans pan gasket was leaking so it was replaced and fluid topped up. The rumble strip issue was occurring before this repair so I'm not convinced that the shop is at fault... however all of the lights came on a couple of days after I brought it back from the shop.

I haven't had it in to the shop yet but I have found a low mile trans out of a 2008 2wd.

I'm wondering if it's possible to swap this trans into my truck.

Interesting... unfortunately I'm in Canada and getting an entire truck over the border would likely be impractical. Thanks though

Ive looked into it, hard to fine concrete answers, but they appear the same minus the tailshaft section in place if the t case...

I looked in the manual and it looks similar but there's nothing more specific than an illustration. For one you would have to verify that the tailshaft has the same part number between both types of transmissions. The other thing is they are computer controlled so it may have a different internal computer that it may communicate with the 4WD system in your truck.

You could probably find out by calling Toyota or maybe a good local transmission shop.

So what is your plan? Is it to convert the truck to 2wd? If so you probably could make it work by tricking the computer to think that the transfer case is still in place. If it's to convert the transmission to accept the transfer case then I think you'll have your hands full. I doubt anyone will answer your question as most just wouldn't even try it. Way back when I took a 2wd stick and tore it apart to fix a 4wd transmission in an 85 SR5 pickup. I didn't get it exactly right but it worked. Back then both reverse and 2nd gear were kind of weak and finding a used 4wd trans in the junk yard was hard ($$$$).

If your handy and don't mind an adventure then it could work. If I had to guess I would say it could be a bad valve body and possibly the torque converter. It's possible to remove the valve body without removing the transmission but not the torque converter. If I was to try what you're talking about do it would be to swap the valve body and clutch pack. Chances are the 2wd tranny isn't going to come with a torque converter but I would replace it as well with a reman one. If there's a transmission shop near you they may do it. You could check with a company that deals with the valve body and ask them if a 2wd and 4wd are the same.
