Hey guys, do you know if a second gen camper shell will fit a third gen? Sorry if this has been answered before.

    Sort of.
Depends on your expectations and willingness to mess with it.

The only real difference that I could tell with my Long Bed was that the 3rd Gen tailgate is 1.5" thicker than the tailgate of a Gen 2 so this makes the camper 1.5" short on the Can end.

It is a simple fix with a peice of 2"x2" aluminum L bracket attached to the shell to close that gap but simple for me might not be simple for you?

Here is a 2nd gen shell on a 3rd gen truck

I have the 5.5 ft bed. I found a second gen camper shell and am trying to determine if it will fit.

Well I didn't really have to do any of that and it fit fine.
The lines of the bed between the generations was identical really.

I understand the idea here but not all of this is required depending on the shell that you find.
Again I stood there and measured the 2nd gen that the red one came from and the only difference was the tailgate thickness.

I could have shaved the back flat to have it sit slightly better but it was hardly needed either.

Either way I took the red one off last night actually and found a commercial shell for a Ford Truck which is a lot better for me using the truck for work anyway and the Ford shell works pretty well out of the box too.
You just need to understand and measure carefully and I found that many shells can work if you need one badly enough and don't want to spring for a new one.

I know this is common. I'm looking for a crewmax shell for 2014+ but it's hard to find and I'm in a bind, needing one by the end of the month. Does anyone know if the 2013- will fit a 2014+, even if it doesn't fit perfectly and look great? I just need a little weather protection for a move to the east coast, hoping I won't experience too much water at all. Pictures would be amazing if anyone has any with that specific bed size and caps listed here.

Well I think this is asked and answered right here already really.

The only difference is the thickness of the tailgate on the newer trucks and this will mean an 1 1/2" gap at the cab end of the bed which can be easily sealed with anything of that thickness attached to the cab end of the shell or bed.

    Where are you located?

I found one from a 2013 same color that I’m going to check out this week and test fit.

So if the one you are seeing has a normal flip up back door then you have to index it to that meaning that for the back door to work the shell has to be set so that the door works well.

This will make the tailgate thickness difference show up at the cab end where it is really a simple fix I think.

I appreciate the response. As long as it will cover the items I'm moving from potential rain, I'm going to get it. If I can make it work to where it functions and only needs minor adjustments to be a forever topper, I'll ensure I document everything I've done and post it to this website on a new thread. I'm sure there's plenty of people wanting to know what it takes to make it work so they don't have to spend months searching for a used one or $2200 on a new one.

I bought a 2012 shell and put it on my 2019. LEER, not sure what specific model. It was the crank windows that open the very back, almost like wings and no window up front. The gap on the back is minimal. I didn't have to shim it at all, just arranged it to where the tailgate would close and the rubber gasket up front is as close to the window as possible. Theres a very minor gap in the front gasket and the rear window to tailgate but I'm confident that if I replace the front gasket with a new one, that gap will go away and I'll just put some other kind of gasket at the bottom of the glass and it will seal.

Moral of the story, if you want a cheaper top that seals all the way around without paying new prices...this LEER works!! Don't be afraid to try it out.

I'm pretty new at forums and posting so I'm unsure if I can tag this to where it's easily searchable for future people that question this and want pictures. I know it was a pain in the butt finding something before I went and did it myself.

Let me know any questions. I'll update after I run through some rain, I know it's coming here in Texas!!

It didn't come with a key but it does have the lock/unlock wiring for the key fob and buttons with doors. I'm hoping to find a new lock with key and the harness to wire in the lock function. Any ideas?image4.jpg image3.jpg

Glad it worked out for yours like I was sure that it would!
New locks are $15 at the dealer and they can certainly give you the correct pin out of that connector too.

A $20 2"x2" Aluminum L channel will easily attach to the shell or the bed at the cab gap and make it water tight, guess how I know?!

The color even looks great on yours!
