    Hello,

Will an older camper shell (2014-2017 models or so) fit a 2020 long bed tundra? My dad just purchased a 2020 double cab SR5 with TRD package and 8 foot bed. When we looked on Leer.com, it said that none of their shells would fit.

    Thanks for any help!

    Mike

Well it just sort of depends on the shell really.
When talking about the bed length,2014 and earlier are the older ones and 2015 to now are the same and known as 3rd Gen.
The Tailgate in a 3rd Gen is 1 1/2" thicker than the 2nd Gen and so if the shell has to reach the actual outside edge of the tailgate then the shell could be 1 1/2" too short if for an earlier one.

This is not really a deal breaker though depending on the shell and your ability to mod things a little bit.
I have just used a 1 1/2 L Angle of aluminum riveted to the Cab end of the shell to cover the difference as the back door needs to fit over the tailgate regardless and the 1 1/2 then ends up at the cab end if that makes sense?

Also there are Shells that replace the tailgate and these might work again depending on the shell.

There are also shells made for Ford and Chevy trucks that can work on a LB Tundra but a tape measure is really your best tool to decide if they will work for you.

I have used one made for a Ford and it was just fine so......

It might just take some work to determine for yourself what works and what does not but depending on your expectations there are several options in the end aside from just buying one new made for your bed.

You sure 2014 is not 3rd gen?

Good to know as I shop for a truck to put a shell on! Checked the ARE build page and there are indeed fewer options for 2nd Gen (pre-2015) RCLB Tundras, but they make commercial aluminum shells for any year.
