BSM Malfunction after new mirror install

I had a guy driving too far over the center line hit my mirror. I only had to replace the glass part of the mirror, found the one that has BSM and heat (2018 Tundra).

Now when I start my Tundra it shows a BSM Malfunction and an RCTA malfunction. I tried unhooking the battery for a few minutes, it didn't work.

Does it just take a while of driving for it to re-calibrate?

I know the thread title says new mirror, but was this replacement glass actually new or was it a used part? I remember that the wiring and connectors on the back of the glass seemed fairly fragile.

If clearing the code(s) doesn't work the replacement part may be defective. I went with Spotter Mirrors for my truck (BSM & heated) and so far I've been very happy with them.

 

The replacement glass was new, ordered it off of Amazon. How do you clear the codes?

Whats odd here is that its also telling me that the RCTA is malfunctioning, and that's a totally separate part.

I guess it is possible though that although new, the part is defective. I've read that I should not have to have the BSM calibrated.

My understanding is that the RCTA system works with BSM, hence the two errors. In theory disconnecting the battery should clear active module codes, but if the problem still exists they will pop up again. An ODB2 scanner is the best way to check & clear them.

I replaced my mirror glass due to them having cosmetic scratches so I didn't have to deal with any error issues or calibration. But in your case with an Amazon replacement my bet would be on a defective part.

 

Other parts are probably broke in the mirror assembly you aren’t aware of. Toyota doesn’t sell just the glass. It only comes as a whole assembly, for this very reason. On top of the fact that Amazon replacement parts are very cheaply made and not always compatible

 

I would guess that the connector to the glass was damaged, possibly internally, or that the Amazon glass is some type of cheap knockoff crap that doesn't actually work. It's getting more and more common with scamazon, unfortunately.

Unless the also hit your rear bumper then I would not think you need to calibrate anything. The BSM/RCTA sensor is behind your rear bumper panel and shouldn't be directly impacted by the loss of a mirror.

 

The old mirror was cracked but all the sensors still worked, no wiring was broken or anything. When I put the new mirror glass on, everything connected fine.

So I'm leaning toward just replacing the glass with something NOT off Amazon and returning the Amazon one. Just need to see if I can find something where I don't have to buy the whole assembly because its not damaged.

 

You need to stick with oem. And oem only comes as a whole assembly. Otherwise, you’re just piss*ng in the wind

 

Go on car-part and see if you can find one for cheap. I’d follow everyone else’s advice and only go with oem. For quick reassurance you can temporarily connect your old mirror and see if everything clears up. I’d be willing to bet the resistive load of the led built into the Amazon mirror is either too little or too great (not sure which one.. it’s early) and it’s throwing the bsm system for a loop. Anyway, just my $.02

edit: also, it is possible to short your bsm control module in your rear bumper by accidentally crossing wires in your mirror. Ask me how I know..

I put the old mirror back on temporarily and everything worked fine. I ordered another mirror (glass only) from A1 -Auto, they warranty the part. I'll find out this Sat when I get it how it works. I know 'warrantied' doesn't mean it will be any more compatible that the Amazon one. Taking off the whole inside of the door panel just to replace broken glass is not an attractive option.

However, if the next one doesn't work, its fully OEM.

more and more on Amazon sellers are just straight up lying in their description these days as well. Every $20 Chinese flashlight advertises a lumen output equal to the sun.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone selling basic mirror glass advertised as having defrost, BSM, HJS, BJS, ZJS etc…

 

Wanted to provide an update. The mirror/glass replacement I ordered A1-Auto works great.
