We are picking up our new travel trailer Labor Day week. I may only have 100-150 miles on the Tundra by then. Will it be ok to tow a 5,000lb camper for close to 150 miles before I have at least 500 miles on the Tundra? If so then maybe I need to run out the 38 gallons of gas the dealer just put in it this coming week.

Per the manual, it isn't recommended.

I wouldn't do it but know many others probably would.

Go for a few long drives before then and hit the recommended minimum mileage

How Long Does It Take to Break in an Engine?
The time it takes to break in an engine differs by manufacturer. Most recommend avoiding high RPMs in the first 1,000 to 1,500 miles; a maximum of 3,500 RPM is the ballpark for diesel engines, rising to 4,500 RPM for petrol.

Redex fuel additive to ensure peak engine performance and efficiency.
    • Better performance – Breaking in a new car will help to improve engine performance in the long-term. That’s because friction is limited and parts are balanced and working together efficiently, ensuring better power delivery.
    • Improved long-term engine health – With parts working at their best and oil flowing smoothly through the system, breaking in your car for the first 1,000 or so miles ensures optimum engine health in the years to come.
6 Techniques for Breaking in a New Car
If you’re keen to take great care of your car from the very first mile, take a look at our tips on how to break it in to ensure optimum engine health. We’ve also included advice on driving safely within the first 1,000 miles to let the tyres, brakes and suspension bed in.

    1. Don’t Push the Engine Too Hard
In the first 1,000 miles, don’t push the engine to the red line. This can put a lot of strain on the piston rings and cylinders, and can worsen manufacturing imperfections.

As a rule of thumb, anything up to 4,000 RPM is safe in the first 1,000 miles. After that, you can gradually increase the RPM without any negative effects.

I wouldn't cancel a trip over it, but try to get some miles on it before you tow

I think it also recommends maintaining a lower speed if towing while in that break in period.

We had this issue with our new 4runner. We had a family vacation that we were going to take the Tundra but needed more interior storage. The manual recommended 500 miles before any towing and 1000 miles before towing over 45 mph. I had my wife drive as much as possible, including a few just because drives. We only got to 300 miles before we had to leave. The trailer was only 2500 lbs so I just took it easy towing and hung out with the big rigs. Take that’s for what it’s worth.

I would get as many miles as you can, mainly highway for 15-20 min. Stop for an ice cream or beer.

If you have a thermal temp gun, check the rear differential (especially when towing) often. You will see why you are supposed to break in the gear sets. 250* is maximum continued temperature, and some say spikes of 300* are ok.

I would follow your owners manual. Some manufacturers have this programmed into the ECM for engine/drivetrain break in (corvette is one of them).
