Hey guys, I bought my truck with only the spare key (gray one) how do i go about adding a remote to lock/unlock doors. Not sure how it is on the Tundras, but on my Lexus, if you don't have the master key, you cannot get a new keyfob unless you change the ECU and ignition module and stuff. Hope it's not like that :(

    It's a 2008 SR5 with power windows/locks

It's getting cold out and I'd like to be able to press unlock and just jump in, help greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'd go back to dealer and make them give you a master key with wireless key fob. Otherwise you need to go to a toyota dealer and pay them to make a master key and key fobs...

I bought the truck from craig's list, he blamed it on his wife that she lost the key set one day and all he's been using was that spare.

Then you're only choice is to go to dealer or locksmith. Might cost you a few hundred.

Other option would be to have an alarm/remote-start system installed. Good luck.

Even though i don't have the original master key, I can still just buy the fob have it programmed? That was the issue with my Lexus, without the original keys, you are SOL basically unless you want to spend 2 grand on a new ecu ignition cylinder and such.

Might just be my paranoia, but I’d worry the previous owner kept the original key so he can steal it back.

The Gray key is technically called the Valet key. On cars, it can only open the door and be used in the ignition; no for trunk or glove box. Don't have a truck, so can't say specifically what it can and cant be used for. It cannot be used as a master key to make duplicates nor to program a remote.

That said, the keys originally may have come with a small tag with a key code which can be used to program a new key at the dealer. Check glove box.

Or, find out which dealer sold the truck originally, go there and ask if they can help make a new master key.

Note, with any dealings with the dealer, make sure you bring registration that has the VIN number or better yet, the title. Either one must have your name and address which matches your license.

You are in a real risky situation, just having the Valet key. If you loose that or even accidentally lock it inside, you are in a heap of bad news.

And no, all the tips on programming by opening the door, touch the brakes, honk the horn and clap three times won't work.

Should be good to go on the 2008. They'll just need to reseed the computer.

This small silver tag with the key code is just used to cut a new key. You can not use it to program the key.

*sigh* so this will be more or less like the Lexus, i bought the truck 700 miles away, can't get the RCSB here. I'll stop by the dealership tomorrow and see what they say.
