Bought one, what would you check?

    Man these things sell fast...

    After some time trying unsuccessfuly to find a 1st gen, I just came across a one owner, California, 2007 Tundra with 115k that had been traded in. I ran up there and bought it (for just under $20k).
    This particular dealer has a 3 day return policy, so I wanted to make sure I didn't get a lemon.

    Carfax shows some dealer service history. I called the most recent dealer and they told me that at 109k (2/2020) owner requested a multipoint inspection, water pump and belt if needed, battery, and interior lights. It also shows a "5k service" which I assume is oil change, and a cabin filter.

    I'm still trying to get better records (and I may have tracked down the original owner) but I was wondering what else you would check. I asked 2 dealers if they do detailed inspections and both said they only do a "safety inspection." I want someone to tell me if the center driveshaft has too much play and is about to drop off, or something like that :)

    Advice welcome! Other than a slightly worn drivers seat, some fading on the roof and front bumper clearcoat, and only having one key, it seems fine. I did notice a little ticking from the engine (almost like a diesel sound) which worries me a bit but may be common?

    register on toyota owners site with your VIN. It will pull the whole history at Toyota.

    So what I don't see - any evidence of transmission fluid or differential fluid exchange, power steering fluid exchange, brake flush.

    it should also show whole history since it was first bought back in 2007 unless taken care at independent shop.

    Yeah I went a ways back - brake fluid was done back at 40k, ECM reprogrammed. Radio replaced at 20k under warranty. Nothing noteworthy.
    The leaking shock above I will look into. Glad the water pump is done ($1431 for a pump?!?) and front brakes are new.

    seems like it was well taken care of if taken at dealership every time.

    I read the service history you provided as suggestions not actual work done so I would call dealer and confirm what was done. $1431 water pump suggestion must include the timing belt, I would hope.

    I don’t think the ticking sound would be a diesel sound. Might be an exhaust manifold leak common to 4.7L is it a 4.7L?

    Service history is actual, not suggested. Of course it's not a diesel sound - it's like a diesel sound. 2007 Tundra is a 5.7L.
    Had inspection done at Toyota today where their master tech went through it.
    He found:
    • coolant low
    • windshield washer fluid low
    • battery holddowns missing
    • rear shock leaking
    • front tire had a nail in it
    Otherwise checks out.
    I noticed late in the day that the radio is wonky - you go to make it louder and it gets lower, or turns off. Seems like the on/off/vol knob is messed up.
    I plan on replacing it anyway but it's yet another small flaw. Used cars for you...

    I’m sorry I thought it was a first gen. That’s like my second dumb comment in a week :eek:. Then the diesel sound is probably the chain tensioner. I’m planning to replace mine soon. Lots of threads on that.

    If you have the smaller 4.7 V8, it uses a timing belt. Unless you can verify with 100% certainty that the timing belt has been changed, you need to replace it ASAP. The bigger 5.7 V8 IMO is the way to go on these trucks, equally bad gas mileage but no timing belt and about 100 more horsepower. Or at least it feels like that under your right foot.

    Yeah, it's the 5.7l for sure. Tons of power, maybe too much :)
