Hi everyone! New member from Redlands, CA and working as a teacher. I just bought a 2000 tundra limited which has about 154k and engine and everything is working great. I do have to replace the shocks and struts... (any recommendations?). Also what do you all recommend to do now that I just bought it, should I change out the transmission fluid (still pink... I just checked it yesterday). Oil was changed 300 miles. Any other things I should do given it has ~150k on it.

I want to be able to keep this forever as a DD and general moving stuff. I don’t plan on using it for any towing at all! Looking to forward hearing for you all.

Welcome from a former Riverside resident who always liked Redlands.

Change all fluids, spark plugs and air filter to start with a clean slate.

Figure out if the timing belt, serpentine belt and water pump job has been done. If not, get that done. This is the only serious maintenance job these trucks need, it is recommended at 90k miles but I went 190k before doing mine.

Ok thanks! I’ll bring it into my mechanic and check those things out!

Just a quick question as well... what do you guys do as far as changing out the transmission fluid? I’ve heard conflicting things from people.

The dump and refill method should be fine. The stories I have heard in general where things go wrong were related to flushing by machine or the old bucket trick.

I change mine by dump and refill every 30-40k and am around 230k with no problems.

Most people recommend doing just a drain and refill. Make sure you buy the proper fluid. Keep in mind this only gets out around half the fluid at best. A flush is good if you know the history, and know that it's it's been done regularly. I think even the Toyota dealerships near me have stopped doing the flush though. Don't forget to do your rear differential fluid. If it's 4WD you'll want to do the transfer case and front diff fluid as well. This is often overlooked. The transfer case and rear differential are extremely easy to do yourself. If I can do it, you can do it and save a bunch on labor.

As for shocks and struts. Don't make the mistake I made by getting the Monroe quick struts. They are cheap for a reason. It really depends on how much you want to spend and what your intentions are with the truck. I actually have a thread going right now where I asked for feedback.
