Some of you may have seen my previous thread. My 17 SSM Tundra was rear ended and totaled. I loved that truck, but it took the hit like a champ and no one was hurt. I just recently bought a new to me 2019 Sport in Midnight Black Metallic with 75k miles. Previous owner kept it clean and took care of it so I’m happy with the purchase so far. I’ll keep this thread going with all of my upgrades.

I like it. So what are some of the differences between the 2019 and the 2017 that you have noticed? Or are they pretty much the same truck? It definitely looks like it was taken care of by the previous owner.

    Too many, but not enough....
The 2019 no longer has the tranny cooler, thats probably the biggest single difference.

Yeah the trans cooler is probably the biggest thing. But the biggest thing I tow is a 5x8 trailer so I’m not too worried about that.

The 19 also has the parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and updated instrument cluster, which is nice.

Fortunately mine has the factory towing package and because of that I understand it still has the trans cooler. The adaptive cruise control is pretty cool. I use that when I go to visit my sister up at Mammoth Lakes so I don't get anymore speeding tickets on the 395. It has lane departure as well but I shut that off. It also has that thing that is supposed to help you not kill pedestrians when you run into them crossing the road. Not sure how that is even possible. I'm not sure about the parking assist though. There is an icon in the setup screen that would indicate that my truck possibly has parking assist but there are no sensors for it that I know of. What does it do anyways? Does it beep at you if you are about to run over the neighbors kid in the driveway? If my truck has it it is turned off.

Did your 2017 have leveling head lights or the automatic high beams that dim when on coming traffic approaches? How about the rear window that rolls down? These are some of the features I like about mine.

So do you have any mods in mind?

Unfortunately regardless of tow package or not Toyota removed the transmission cooler on all 19-21 models. They still listed it on the window sticker but it’s just the puck they are now calling a warmer and cooler

Don't need a trans cooler. Aisin fluid is made to run hot. Just make sure you put it back in there if you ever change it...

I have the lane departure turned off. My wife has it on her Highlander and she says it drives her nuts. I’m still playing around with everything, but I think the parking sensors just beeps and gives you a heads up display notice when you get close; not sure if the distance that sets it off. And yea, my 17 had the leveling headlights but didn’t have the auto high beams.

As far as mods, I’ve already put wheels and tires on, just gotta snap some pictures! I need to put the cat shield from my old truck onto this one. I’d like to put the locking tailgate on and some bed lights. Oh and my Pioneer head unit from my old truck will make it in this one eventually.

I don't know about that. There is a cooling loop up front. I have the radiator then the condenser for the AC and a smallish cooling loop that goes back towards the transmission. I mean I haven't traced the lines directly back to the transmission but they head in that general direction. What else would it go to?

So you still have your 2017 after it was rear ended? That's cool at least you can harvest the cat shields and what ever else you might want to. Usually if the insurance company declares the vehicle a total lose they keep the totaled vehicle and you then need to buy it back from them if you want to do anything with it. You definitely need to upgrade the sound system if you like to listen to music while you drive because the ones that came in these trucks are terrible. So I would definitely put the Pioneer in. I'm just about done installing a complete custom sound system in mine. Just trying to find the time between work and the rain to finish it. I will post a build thread on it once it's done.

    Once again congrats.

That loop cooler is for the power steering. There is no transmission oil cooler on any 2019 unless you add one yourself. That's what I did on my Platinum.

Everyone always saying there is no trans cooler on the 2019+ is a bit of misnomer. Coolant flows through a heat exchanger which is attached to the side of the transmission all the time. When the transmission fluid is colder than the coolant, the heat exchanger acts like a warmer to help get the trans up to temp quicker. When the transmission fluid is warmer than the coolant, the heat exchanger is cooling the transmission fluid. This is very similar to the exchanger that is usually just located within the radiator on most cars and trucks. Heat exchanger on the side of the transmission is also essentially how all of the Ford 10-speeds are cooled. Honda and many others have been doing it for decades.

The only difference between the 2019+ trucks is Toyota removed a air to oil cooler up front and the thermostat that sent transmission fluid up to it. The older trucks still had the same puck style heat exchanger on the sides of the transmissions, which is the primary cooling device for the transmission.

Does the OP's 2019 have a trans cooler of some sort? Yep. Is it the best setup ever? Nope. Does OP need to upgrade immediately when he is just driving his normal truck normally? Most likely not.

Yes, that warmer becomes a cooler once the transmission temp exceeds engine coolant temps. To me, the point is that Toyota removed a part of the temperature controlling system the transmission was designed with and ran for years on the tow package trucks. They’re tough transmissions for sure, and I think failures within warranty will be rare if not virtually nonexistent. We’ve seen one on the forum, and the guy ghosted us after posting his service write up, so we never heard back what Toyota corporate determined. He was towing a 3k trailer 5 days a week, and his 2020 transmission burned up. He had traded an early 2nd gen for his 2020 and was using the 2020 to do the exact same job he used his older Tundra for. Never had any problems with the older Tundra.

For those of us who tow and haul and want 8-10 years of service out of it, there is a fairly cheap kit one can buy plus some simple OEM parts (thermostat and lines) to recreate the original design.

You would think Toyota would leave well enough alone. A truck with a tow package should always have a trans cooler in my opinion as well as a dipstick so you can monitor the condition and level of the fluid. I've heard stories about how bad the condition of the trans fluid can get after as little as 40,000 miles especially for trucks driven primarily in heavy stop and go traffic and those used for towing.

So who makes the trans cooler kit you are talking about and how involved is it to install?
