BOSS Coilover Reliability

    How's it going everyone? So sorry if this has been covered before, but I've been searching and couldn't seem to find a good thread about it, so here it is. I've got a 2003 SR5 4wd that I've had for about 2 years. I got it with a spacer lift installed that I believe is 3 inches because theres a block under the rear leafs, but I didn't install it so I'm not sure. I recently discovered that my upper ball joints are going out and I need new struts. Through the course of my research on lifts for these trucks, I learned that spacer lifts are no bueno and cause the upper ball joints to wear faster with the stock UCAs. Because of this, anything 2.5" and above requires new UCAs, and because the upper ball joints are pressed in, it's easier to just replace the UCAs anyway.

    Since I'm a college student, I dont have a ton of money, but I am willing to do the lift right because I love the truck and want to keep it for a long time. My current plan is to get some SPC UCAs and BOSS coilovers from ToyTec. I've been reading a lot of good stuff about ToyTec, and this seems to be a good setup for the money. My only hang up is I dont know how reliable these coilovers are. Im willing to pull the trigger on this if these coilovers are going to last a while. If anyone has any experiences with these coilovers over the course of a couple of years I'd love to hear about it.

    I’ve looked at the Boss setup and even installed a few on Taco’s. I would purchase one if I owned a Toyota truck/SUV.

    I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Boss kit. If you want to save a bit of money you could also look at the Old Man Emu kit. Toytech sells it. Both seem to have good reputations.

    Also, if you don't know the history of your suspension, this might be a good time to replace your lower ball joints also. Do not go aftermarket on those, stick with OEM.

    Rancho Quicklift/RS9000XLs, Rancho rear 1.5" blocks with RS9000XL shocks in rear, SuspensionMAXX extended sway bar links.
    The upper ball joints aren't hard to replace using the AutoZone loaner kit (assuming yours aren't rusted). And they are pressed into the spindle, not the UCA. Honestly, you'd be better off just getting something like the 5100s set up a clip or two (to limit lift to 2.5" or lower) and replacing the upper and lower ball joints if funds are tight. This will be a very reliable and *much* cheaper option if you aren't doing a lot of offroading. You'll need to go OEM on the ball joints (About $300 for all four). You'll be looking at close to a grand for a setup like this, and closer to $2,500 for the Boss setup. I don't see the value (if you're not doing a lot of offroading), personally.

    Further proof that my skills are sub par. I couldn't make that kit work to save my life. There wasn't enough room in there height wise.

    Yeah I had to undo the brake line clips and pull the calipers off, and i was able to swing the spindle over *just* enough to get it angled past the fender flare (had a cover on the fender) and fit the kit over it.

    That's the exact set up I have had on my 06 for the last year. I like it. It did really well the time I took it to the off road park too.

    Don't mind the ziptie, was just temporary to hold the brake line because I misplaced the screw lol

    Btw I would wait til black Friday to buy all this stuff. I bought mine last BF and saved like $300

    Awesome. Thanks for all the quick responses, I really appreciate it. I'm liking the BOSS coilovers. It sounds like theyre good quality and should last a while. I have the budget for everything and I like the way the truck sits now, so getting rid of the spacers and getting some ride quality back sounds good to me. How hard is it to install the SPC UCAs, coilovers and ball joints? Asking because I dont have any equipment (jack, jack stands, breaker bar, etc) up at college, so Im thinking me and a buddy can install all the stuff in a day when I go home for fall break. I have access to a lift and all the tools I think I'll need there. Is that reasonable?

    Reliability and longevity honestly boils down to the end user, as in "you take care of it, it will take care of you". I always recommend giving your coilovers a good deep bath when you are at the car-wash to insure you don't have any extra contaminate build up on the shock shafts which could lead to internal damage to the wiper gaskets on the shock shafts.

    We try to build our coilovers as strong as possible but still keep them on a price point of the every day person can afford without feeling guilty.
