Can i roll my truck around if I bolt the axles back in without the third in the axle? Will I destroy my bearings, or seals?

Just started the “looking into it” process
May go east coast diffs and throw a locker in it.

If you have bigger tires on your truck than stock, you may want to regear while you're at it. Just keep in mind if you are 4wd, you'd also have to regear the front diff

FWIW, someone's had those gears out before you. Factory installation uses a gasket, yours has FIPG.

I did a quick search at car-part.com using a Portsmouth NH Zip Code and you may be able to turn up a used carrier within ~ 100 miles or so. I found mine on FB Marketplace (3.90 gears) for ~ $400 (seemed high at the time, but now maybe not so much). You can use any 2000 - 2006 carrier with the right gears (yes, the is a difference between 3.90 and 3.91) but 2005 - 2006 use a larger flange that will need to be changed. Bon chance!

Edit: Here are the two variations - The 3.909 (rounds to 3.91) has an 11 tooth pinion and a 43 tooth ring, while the 3.90 has a 10 tooth pinion and a 39 tooth ring. You don't say if you're 4WD or 2WD. For 4WD the 3.91 should match up to the front diff. If 2WD now is an easy time to choose whatever ratio you want.

The spider gears are know to fail on our 8.4 3rd member. Once they start stripping out, it will cause collateral damage to the R&P gears. Performing a one wheel burnout puts quite a bit of load on spider gears. Spider gears in general weren’t designed for that kind of long term abuse.

My local U Pull It yard sells 3rd members for around $75 (i can’t remember exactly).

    I didn’t catch if the OP’s truck is 2wd or 4wd, but i’d swap in a Sequoia 4.10 3rd member in a heartbeat…unless the tires are oversized at all, then i’d go with a 4.30 or 4.56.

I got 265's on it. 4wd currently 3.91 gearing. I can get a complete third from east coast gear supply for around $840. I found a local parts truck for $700, might get that if a few other parts are good on it.

That's definitely more than the $26 i paid for mine at my local Pick n Pull yard last year.

    ^ this.

Get both 1st gen sequoia diffs and you'll have 4.10's, you just might need to swap the rear pinion flanges.

If i looked around here in the Pac NW, i'm betting i could find those same high prices, but i look for lower prices...such at a U Pull it wrecking yard where you pull your own parts.

I walked buy a Sequoia last month at a yard. I was temped to pull the from and rear 3rds out of it. I don't have a use for them, but i was thinking about reselling them at a later point. I guess i'm just not an opportunist? And FYI, I didn't have to swap the rear pinion on my Sequoia 3rd member into my 4wd tundra.

Nice. Yeah, it's a 'might' as there are 2 or 3 different flanges iirc.

4WD can also pull the slip yoke, driveshaft flange yoke, and u-joint and order the correct pattern driveshaft flange yoke, that's what I ended up doing.

I couldn't find a part number for 2WD flange yokes, but they probably exist for some other Toyota application. 2WD/4WD flange yokes are different since 4WD uses 1510 series u-joints and 2WD uses 1310 series. Bearing caps and distance between snap rings are different between the two joints, so 4WD flange yokes aren't compatible on 2WD.

    37315-0K010 - 4WD 66x66mm flange yoke
    37315-35070 - 4WD 60x60mm flange yoke

(I was lazy with the caliper when taking measurements, wasn't trying to get them precise in the pictures)
