I have 144,000 on my 2002 Tundra. The head gasket blew. The mechanic says he does not recommend repairing a blown head gasket because it creates an uneven pressure and the old engine will not stand up under it. He recommends replacing the engine with a used or rebuilt one.

I am totally ignorant of these matters, but this makes no sense to me. Is he correct or should I find another garage.

As long as the head is not warped or cracked, or the block is cracked, replace the gaskets and move on. I would replace the water pump and all hoses as well as the thermostat, you are in that deep might as well.

With a blown head gasket, engine temps probably went way high. With resurfaceing the heads and block, all the other dis-re assemble, it might be better for a used/rebuilt engine

Thanks for all the comments. The quotes for repair and for the used engine are so close that it is a wash. The issue that is causing me to pause is that the engine is a used, 76,000 miles, but has not been rebuilt. It has simply been pulled from another Tundra. A rebuilt one is north of 6K when all is said and done. I am thinking that I will have it towed to the Toyota dealership and go with the repair.

I would go that route. Good luck with whatever you decide on. Cheaper than a new truck lol

I also have a 2002. Can you give us an indication of how you think this happened? This is pretty rare for our trucks and especially rare for only 144K miles. Were there any signs before it blew? White smoke, overheating etc?
